why do scuba divers have to come up for air slowly?
Why is it dangerous to come up quickly?
I am going to re-word your question:
"Why do scuba divers have to surface slowly from depth?"
As you are diving, the water that is above you increases the surrounding pressure. With this increased pressure, the tissues in your body will absorb more nitrogen from the air that you are breathing from your tank. The absorbtion of nitrogen is harmless until you start to ascend towards the surface.
As you are ascending, the dissolved nitrogen starts to come out of those tissues. If you ascend slowly enough, the nitrogen will pass from the tissue to your bloodstream to your lungs and will be passed out of the body when you exhale. If you ascend too quickly, the dissolved nitrogen will form bubbles, the large bubbles could result in the following:
1. The bubbles stay in the tissue, and seem to migrate to the joints. This is what is typically referred to as the bends or decompression sickeness (DCS).
2. The bubbles enter the bloodstream and then cause an AGE or air-gas embolism. This is very dangerous if the bubbles reach the brain or heart.
As mentioned earlier, if a diver ascends slowly, the chances of bubbles forming are minimal.

Only in extreme cases to the bends kill people. Most of the time people can be treated in a recompression chamber (hyperbaric chamber) and return to diving.

Actually, nitrogen narcosis occurs at depth. The cure for nitrogen narcosis is to ascend some and the effects will pass. Nitrogen Narcosis is not harmful, but can cause impaired judgement which might lead to something harmful.

Sort of. As you ascend, the changin pressure will need to be equalized just like on the descent. The ears normallty auto-equalize on the ascent, but a too quick of an ascent could cause ear injury. As far as the lungs, if the diver breathes continuously (i.e. never holds one's breaths) there shouldn't be any lung issues.

Oxygen has nothing to do with this question. Oxygen and depth is a concern for scuba divers since oxygen can become toxic at depth, but it is a completely different conversation.

The first rule of scuba diving is to breathe continuously and never hold your breath. If you don't hold your breath, your lung's can't explode.

MLB Division Champion gear by Majestic Athletic. Does anyone find the t shirts etc uncomfortable?
So im excited my Yankees won the division and i run out to get the AL East champion hat and shirt. However the tshirt is very uncomfortable plus I had to exchange the size twice since they made these things for giants. I also looked at the sweatshirts but the sleeves are so long it would be for very tall men (not all of us are tall). Does anyone else find the Majestic Athletic gear to be uncomfortable?

My partner is a shopophobe. He grew up in a country town and likes to call himself a rural sexual, as opposed to a metro sexual.
If it were up to Hubby, he'd still be wearing lumberjack shirts from 1992. We can't have this - I have my own reputation to uphold - so gradually, almost without realizing it, I've found myself shopping for him. What started as a T-shirt here, pair of socks there, has become a full ensemble for every season.
My taste doesn't always suit his, but no matter. I came back from Woolworths the other day with a new sweater that Hubby turned his nose up at. 'It's me or a potato sack, dear,' I told him placidly, aware that he's never likely to turn protest into shopping action. I have him by his little Calvins.
For this man, retail therapy is something you have after visiting the mall. And he's not alone.
Men, as a species, hate shopping. For them, football is from Mars, fashion is from Venus. Last year, the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania did a study titled 'Men Buy, Women Shop', about the sexes' different priorities when walking down the aisles. Researchers found genders were reverting to stereotype in stores: men were hunters, women gatherers. Men wanted to shoot in, find a parking spot, secure their target item, choose the shortest check-out queue and get the hell out of there. Women were happier to browse, chat to sales people and try samples before making a purchase.
It's this kind of research that could mean my days as a wardrobe dictator are numbered. Stores have realized there's a huge untapped market of male consumers and are adjusting their strategies. The Wharton School study also reported women spend $4-trillion annually and account for 83 percent of US consumer spending. Think of all those bachelors sitting home alone in their lumberjack shirts, with no women to shop for them. What an opportunity. But how can it be exploited?
In the flagship Top Shop outlet on London's Oxford Street, big couches and screens showing sport and music videos were introduced to lull male shoppers into a false sense of security. But this is merely taming the beast, tranquilizing the hunter with TV, not stomping out his phobia.
For Hubby, the worst part about shopping is trying things on. It's hot, it's crowded, the fitting room is too small and he bangs his elbows against walls and curses so violently I blush on behalf of fellow shoppers. He refuses to model any outfits. The mirror is the enemy and basic instincts make him want to smash it into submission.
It's not as if he's ignorant - thanks to being bombarded by celebrities wearing designer gear on television, the Internet and in movies, he knows who Marc Jacobs and
Gucci are. He just won't have a part in their boutiques. If Hubby's unhappy in a busy chain store, he's downright miserable in a minimalist emporium where there's no escaping the suave shop assistant. Poor baby.
But in the trend-setting States, recent research shows male consumers are coming out of the closet and into stores, where they have even been seen to - wait for it - linger, without a wife or mother in sight.
This sounds like progress, but I'm not sure women are better off relinquishing the power of dressing their man. Hubby has no idea how much control his shopophobia has given me. I determine if his feet are warm with woolly socks in winter. I can make him sweat with cheap polyester fabrics in summer. I can turn him into a surfer, a businessman, a biker or a hiker.
Truly, woman maketh the man. So what if I can't change his lumberjack language? I can change his shirts. One red-checked flannel wonder at a time.

Wireline pressure control equipment can be available in two basic flavours: they can be part of a standardised range of wireline pressure control equipment products, or they can be specially designed and made to fit in exactly with a customer's requirements.
The equipment appears in a wide range of sizes, typically from two and a half inches inside diameter to nine inches inside diameter. The products can range from the very simple to the highly complex, depending on their specific use and function.
It is necessary for wireline pressure control equipment to be designed and produced so that it is able to withstand excessive pressures and resist excessive corrosion within the well. Pressures may be as high as 15,000 pounds per square inch, or even higher. Temperatures can also fluctuate and can be found in extreme ranges. Wireline pressure control equipment must be manufactured to withstand everything that is thrown at it.
In any wireline operation it is necessary to maintain the pressure in the oil well. This is achieved by use of a stuffing box, or packing gland. The stuffing box essentially allows the wireline to move freely up and down within the well, confining the fluids and gases within the wellbore and without losing the pressure inside.
As a primary element of this equipment, the stuffing box has several important tasks to perform. It has to maintain well pressure while allowing braided wire to move freely through it. As the braided wire is not uniform in diameter, this presents a problem that requires special attention.
Packing elements made of rubber form a seal around the wire in the first instance. A wireline valve forming a second barrier seal is also required. If a risk of failure of the stuffing box happens or is suspected, this can be closed around the wire to prevent excessive pressure loss. The wireline valve also requires a grease injection head positioned above it, especially in the case of braided wire, to guarantee a proper and acceptable seal.
A wireline blowout preventer can produce a tight seal around slick line or braided cable. It is positioned between the lubricating assembly and the wellhead. Two opposing horizontal ram assemblies are commonly used to compress an effective tight seal around the wireline. This part of the equipment has the effect of containing and controlling the well pressure.
Apart from the wireline pressure control equipment, the pressure inside an oil or gas well is controlled by drilling fluid pressure. Both components work together to provide satisfactory and safe overall pressure control.
The well hole must have enough drilling fluid pressure to overcome the formation pressure, the pressure exerted inside the well by oil, gas and water, for the drilling operation to proceed with safety.
If this is not the case and the formation pressure exceeds the drilling fluid pressure, a blowout is possible. This is where the blowout wireline pressure control equipment comes into effect, sealing the well and containing the pressure.

Ok motorcycle lovers, here is the scene: You are hanging around Weir's Beach during the annual Laconia, NH Bike Week held each June, and it starts to rain (which is not an unusual thing in June in New Hampshire).
Mud is splashing on everyone else's bike -- but not yours! Your bike (with your custom paint job) is neatly covered by a nice lightweight, transportable shelter that you brought with you on the back of your motorcycle.
So, YOU may now be outside in the rain getting soaked and cold, but at least your prized bike is nice and dry. And people are offering you money for your shelter. Well, ok, maybe that's going too far in this dream scene! But, people ARE probably asking you about that nifty tent!
The "tent" they are referring to is called the CycleShelter, which is the brand name for a specially designed, collapsible motorcycle cover that weighs about 30 pounds, which makes it easy to bring with you while you're touring. The standard, single sized shelter fits most motorcycles: it measures approximately 10 1/2 feet long by 4 feet wide. The height at the top of the "dome" measures approximately 70 inches high.
At first glance, one might wonder, "Why not just buy a tarp or inexpensive bike cover rather than carry around a 30-pound tent?"
Well, a tarp or regular bike cover might do the trick in a pinch, but a lot of motorcycle lovers have put a lot of time, effort, and funds into their bikes -- whether they have worked on restoring or painting it, or even if it just represents a hefty financial outlay that they want to protect on a regular basis.
Made of a strong rip-stop polyethylene material, the vented CycleShelter does not touch the bike, so that in itself is a major vote in the shelter's favor. It is ideal for keeping bugs, bird droppings, rain, snow, and pollen off the bike. For people who live near the coast, it helps keep sea salt and sand from settling on the bike as well. They have been sent to US Military personnel serving overseas who are using it to keep their bikes from getting "sand blasted."
There are also other creative uses for the shelter. People use them to store other "toys" in them, such as kids' bicycles. It can be used indoors or outdoors -- inside a garage, it's a great way to cover and protect your motorcycle through the off season.
I've seen one photo where a motorcycle repair project was underway, and the bike and the different parts were on top of the floor panel. When the owner is done working on the project for the time being, all he or she needs to do is pull the cover up and over the bike and parts where it will be waiting for the next work session.
The manufacturer offers a larger model as well, which is approximately 7 1/2 feet wide. This model can be used for two bikes, a trike, or a bike that has a sidecar. This larger model is a bit heavier, and at nearly 60 pounds you would not be able to pack it on the back of the bike. But, if you are pulling a trailer, you might be able to fit it in there.

Different situations and environments require different types of lights and in different quantities. This isn't only influenced by the specifications and limitations of the fittings, but also by the desired effects you need to create. Choosing bulbs / lamps by wattage is a natural way of doing things because e.g. a certain wattage is right and safe for the particular fitting, and we may have a reasonable idea of how 'bright' we want the light source to be, and we have historically always done so. In terms of traditional incandescent bulbs, when buying a bulb as the main light source in a room, most people would think about a 100 watt bulb. Smaller light sources and lamps are likely to have smaller wattages e.g. 60, 40 and below. These however refer to the energy input needs to create the light. They don't actually provide an accurate measure of the light (rather than heat) part of the output. The output may also be even more difficult to estimate if you aren't familiar with energy saving light bulbs.
A lumen therefore is a measure of the intensity of a light source. Talking in terms again of incandescent bulbs, a 60 bulb for example would give you 800 lumens of light output - in other words it gives a good idea of just how 'bright' you want a bulb to be. With low energy light bulbs for instance, the bulbs could require much lower wattages than traditional incandescent bulbs, but still produce a high degree of brightness / light intensity i.e. the same amount of lumens could be produced using many less watts to produce it - this means that it has a higher efficacy.
Lumen is therefore basically a measure of the perceived amount of light / light flux from, in this case, a light bulb or lamp. Technically, what constitutes a lumen is related to a measurement called a candela (the power that a light source gives off in one direction) and a steradian which is essentially a two-dimensional angle projected on to 3 dimensional space (imagine light in a kind of cone shape) i.e. if there was 1 candela emitted across 1 steradian, it would measure 1 lumen.
In simple terms therefore, choosing how bright and intense you want light bulbs and lamps to be can be best estimated by checking the amount of lumens it produces (the output) rather than the wattage needed to create the light (the input). For example, when purchasing low energy and enery saving light bulbs, it's worth studying the packaging for these details. The new style packaging of energy saving light bulbs and low energy light bulbs show many details about the bulbs / lamps e.g. the energy efficiency rating, the equivalent wattages re: traditional incandescent bulbs (inputs), as well as the lumens (output). Although these high efficacy energy saving bulbs cost more to buy, it's worth remembering that they last a long time, which should actually make them cheaper in the long run.

Im buying some clothes off an American website. I need a UK size large, what would that be in American size?
I need a mens large- NOT FOR ME!
I don't know about S, M and L but out sizes are 2 sizes bigger than US sizes so:
UK size 10 = US 6
UK size 12 = US 8
UK size 14 = US 10 etc. etc.
EDIT: If it's for a man you should've made your question clearer. Men's clothes are probably more or less the same. Don't get nasty about it, it's your fault for not including it in your question.
