I was trying to solve this problem, and I just couldn't find one key piece of information. See Pamela or Kathleen K's answer -- how did they know that GB is 1.5 times the radius?
I was trying to find the angle BCD; let that angle be x. Then the area of one of the shaded areas would be 0.5cot3x + x/120 - 0.25. Multiply that by two to get the final answer. (Without the key piece, I had to put everything in terms of x.)
So how DID they know GB was 1.5?
What if the smaller circle's radius was one-third that of the larger, not one-half? Would GB then be 1.33 or something?
GB = GF + FB
GB = 1 + .5 = 1.5
GF is a radius and you were given that FB=AE = 0.5
