Since 1888, Certina has maintained an enviable reputation for its excellent watches and reliable movements. From the time of its integration into the SMH (today's Swatch Group) in the early 1980s, every Certina has been equipped with a high-quality ETA movement.
In a quartz watch movement, high-frequency oscillations are generated in a tiny synthetic crystal, then divided down electronically to provide the extreme accuracy of the Certina internal clock. A battery supplies the necessary energy. The quartz movement is sometimes equipped with an end-of-life (EOL) indicator. When the seconds hand begins moving in four-second increments, the battery should be replaced within two weeks.Most automatic movements are driven by an offset rotor. Arm and wrist movements spin the rotor, which in turn winds the main spring, eliminating the need for a battery. Precision depends upon rigorous manufacturing and the original calibration of the movement, as well as the lifestyle of the wearer.
316L stainless steel this special stainless steel is used in the manufacturing of components exposed to harsh and unfriendly elements. Its superior corrosion resistance, coupled with its advantageous hypo-allergenic qualities, make it perfect for the production of Certina watches. Titanium famous for its use in aeronautics and in surgical equipment, titanium is also a mysterious metal with excellent properties for watchmakers. Light but remarkably hard, stable in extreme temperatures, it is also well known for its hypo-allergenic qualities. Certina has used this innovative material for many years, offering a wide range of titanium watches for fans of high-tech timepieces. PVD on bicolour or yellow watches, Certina uses a special surface treatment called PVD. Physical Vapour Deposition is an environmentally-friendly surface treatment that results in a hard-wearing, long-lasting coating that is up to five times more resistant than more conventional surface treatments. Sapphire crystal is made of crystal powder heated to a temperature of over 2000°C. The resultant sapphire nugget is then cut with great precision into fine slices, trimmed and polished for use as Certina watch glass. Only diamond is harder than extremely hard and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. Certina sport watches set the standard in water resistance.
For water sports, a timepiece with a minimum water resistance of 10 bar (100m) is recommended. All Certina sport watches are equipped with either the "DS" or the "DS+" system and are tested to a pressure of at least 10 bar (equivalent to a depth of 100 metres**) in accordance with the relevant ISO standards.
Every Certina must undergo a series of tests for water resistance before it reaches the sales outlet. The first test places the timepiece under high air pressure, to ensure that air cannot find its way into the watch housing. The following test takes it through wide temperature variations in a damp environment, to ensure the total absence of water condensation inside the watch glass. The final hurdle which must be overcome by every Certina is the diving test: several hours under water at high pressure, to simulate the depth for which the watch has been certified, and guaranteed to withstand The water resistance rating of our watches is based upon laboratory pressure tests, comparable to the pressure conditions to which an unmoving swimmer or diver may be exposed at the corresponding depth in a wide range of water sports, and may show some variation. The conditions under which the timepiece is tested represent a basis for minimum protection that a water-resistant watch should give, and may vary in such cases where strong or intense movements occur.
It should also be understood that water resistance cannot be guaranteed for an indefinite length of time. It may become compromised by accidental shock or impact to the crown, push-button or other areas. For this reason, we recommend that you have your timepiece checked for water resistance by an authorised Certina Service Centre annually, and have any faulty component replaced, if necessary. One should not, under any circumstance, attempt to open a complex, modern watch on one's own.
