I have to assume that you are reading this because you either, have a problem equalizing your ears, or you know someone else who has that problem, or you are an Instructor looking for new tips and wrinkles.
First of all, let's examine the problem:
As we descend in the water column, pressure increases, and presses against the eardrum causing discomfort, which if not resolved will become intense pain, and ultimately lead to a perforated eardrum (which incidentally will bring instant relief from the discomfort and leave you with a feeling of 'fullness' in that ear).
If you are not a diver and have never dived after a coin thrown to the bottom of a swimming pool, maybe you have experienced this phenomenon when descending in an aircraft?
The big trick with this issue is to act early, and never 'push it'.
This is my favorite maneuver, and also the only technique which works for me.
Valsalva Maneuver. (nose holding)
Sounds a bit scary, but it really is the most common way of equalizing that pressure. The technique is simply to hold the nose closed with finger and thumb, and attempt to blow gently through your nose. The resultant 'blow' cannot escape through the blocked nostrils, so travels down the tube that attaches your throat and sinuses to your inner ear.
If you are interested, that tube is called the Eustachian tube.
Some Important Considerations
You can help yourself by developing a habit of 'equalizing' your ears when not diving, Apart from anything else, you may be surprised how much it improves your hearing!
Try to be vertical in the water column as you equalize, really....it helps!
Use a line to control your descent rate if you need it, there is no shame in that at all.
Do not attempt to equalize your ears if you KNOW you have a head cold or are suffering from congestion, you will simply force the infection into your inner ear, almost guaranteeing an ear infection.
Do not take decongestants prior to diving. People tell you that, then surreptitiously takes one. The danger lies in the decongestant wearing off during a dive and causing a reverse block (where you cannot ascend due to the pain), which is not a good situation. I have a much better reason for not taking them; personal experience has shown me that diving with decongestants in my system makes me a lot more susceptible to nitrogen narcosis. As you can now tell, I have dived after taking them, and frankly I do not know anyone who has worked in the industry who has not done it. The pressures to get students through dives puts professionals under pressure to dive, or frankly, lose their job!
SCUBA diving requires professional training, these are purely my thoughts and observations.
Martin is a mine of useful information, and never seems to tire of learning.
