It is a wonderful thing to get ready for scuba diving vacations.  Denver residents can get out of the winter cold and head out to a sunny locale for the best in scuba diving.  But before you do that, you may need to get some appropriate diving equipment.  Denver divers will find that they can shop easily online as well as at local stores for the equipment they need for their next scuba diving adventure.

The type of Denver diving gear you need will in part depend on where you plan to take your scuba diving vacations.  Denver divers that will be vacationing in areas of the world where warm water is the norm may not need any wet suit at all or may opt for a nylon wet suit or a short wet suit to provide the warmth and protection that they need.  If the plan is to vacation where the water temperatures are colder, then a full body wet suit or a dry suit might be in order for your diving equipment.  Denver swimmers will find all of these, plus accessories such as hoods, boots, vests and gloves, available at better retail diving shops.

Another important piece of Denver diving gear is your buoyancy control device, or BCD.  This unit, which also goes by the name of buoyancy compensator, keeps you at the appropriate depth in the water and is a necessary part of your divers equipment.  Colorado divers will find buoyancy control devices suitable for wear by men and women.

You will also need a breathing apparatus as part of your divers equipment.  Colorado scuba divers have options in terms of compressed air or Nitrox, and the type of cylinder that you will use.  Divers also need to use a regulator with their diving equipment.  Denver divers know that the regulator helps to control the pressure of the air in the tank so that it is breathable by you by the time it reaches you.  You will also need a snorkel so that you can conserve air in your cylinder diving equipment; Denver divers also know that they need a pony tank so that you are covered in the event of an emergency.

There are other vital pieces of divers equipment.  Colorado swimmers will also want a compass and a dive computer.  Other information gauges keep track of air pressure in your tank and your depth as you are underwater.  You will also want a mask and fins, and maybe a whistle or air horn and a flashlight that is waterproof, called a dive light.  Your local dive store can offer reliable advice about your needed divers equipment.  Colorado divers can check in with them prior to taking off on scuba diving vacations; Denver swimmers will then make sure they have all the appropriate Denver diving gear needed for their next scuba trip.

Scuba diving equipment has evolved to become sophisticated, incredibly safe, reliable and high performance. There’s a massive range of options and features available, to allow scuba diving in any environment.

To familiarize you with how a set of scuba diving gear works, we’ll run you through a basic set, and discuss what options and features would be suitable for warm water Koh Tao diving.

How Does Scuba Gear Work: A Typical Koh Tao Diving Setup

Scuba Cylinder

Firstly we need somewhere to store the air which we’ll be breathing whilst underwater. Scuba cylinders or tanks) come in a range of sizes and materials. Scuba diving Koh Tao we opt for aluminum cylinders, which are resistant to the corrosive salty ocean conditions, compressing air into 12 litre cylinders at two hundred time normal atmospheric pressure (200 bar). That volume of air allows an average diver to dive for about 45 minutes at normal recreational depths, (factoring in a safety margin).

Regulator – First Stage

This is the bit which attaches to the valve of the scuba cylinder. Since the air inside the cylinder is at two hundred times normal pressure, we need to reduce that pressure down to make it breathable. This is the job of the regulator first stage. Most first stages reduce down the pressure to about ten bar above ambient water pressure (called the intermediate pressure), which is then fed down to the ….

Regulator - Second Stage

This is the bit that you put in your mouth and breathe from. The second stage contains a large diaphragm which the surrounding water pressure pushes on. What that does is adjust the intermediate pressure (delivered from the first stage) to exactly the same pressure as the surrounding water. The result is that when you breathe in, a valve opens and allows air to flow freely. When you stop breathing in or exhale, the valve remains closed allowing you to conserve your air supply.

Regulator - Alternate Air Source

In case your buddy has an equipment problem, you also have a alternate second stage attached to your first stage, which means in the event of an emergency your buddy can also breathe from your cylinder. This is one of the reasons why it’s always a good idea to stick with a buddy when scuba diving.

Buoyancy Control Device - BCD

Obviously we need a way of keeping the cumbersome cylinder attached to us, so the BCD is a robust jacket which allows you to strap the cylinder to your back. The BCD also has a second important function. You can adjust the amount of air inside the jacket so that you hover motionlessly in mid water and control your position underwater. Whilst at the surface you can inflate the BCD to avoid swimming to stay afloat, and save energy.

Wetsuit

Your body looses heat about twenty times faster in water than air, so you’ll need to wear some kind of exposure protection to keep warm. The good news is, Koh Tao diving has very warm water – usually about 30C. That means during the Padi open water course we usually wear a 2.5mm neoprene ‘shorty’ wetsuit , which keeps us comfortable during the dives.

Weights

The bad news is that neoprene is buoyant (as is body fat),  so to be able to descend underwater we have to carry some lead weights. The easiest way to do this (adopted by most Koh Tao dive schools) is to attach the lead to a weight belt which you secure around your waist prior to each dive.

Scuba Diving Mask

Your eyes can’t focus in water, so you need to wear a mask to be able to see when diving. If you have a little spare cash and plan to invest in piece of scuba diving gear of your own, make sure you buy a mask. A good diving mask makes all the difference to your Koh Tao diving experience – if you can see properly you’ll have a much better time!

Diving Fins

With all this gear, it becomes a bit tricky getting around underwater. To make life easier we wear large, rigid diving fins which take all the effort out of swimming, allowing us to maintain our air supply and explore the Koh Tao dive sites with ease.

Buoyancy Control Device
Who invented the buoyancy control device (BCD)?

The jacket-style BCD has a history of gradual development. When SCUBA diving first kicked off as a hobby, BCDs weren't used at all, and the only 'buoyancy adjustment' came from the weights (used to overcome the diver's (un)natural buoyancy) and the lungs. Oh, and swimming to stay off the bottom and kicking the reef to bits wasn't considered such a no-no at that time.

Pilot-style 'Mae West' front-mounted lifejackets were adapted for use as surface support post-dive. Inflation was by integral air cylinder or CO2 cartridge.

Maurice Fenzy had the idea of attaching an oral inflation hose, allowing the lifejacket to be partially inflated/deflated underwater, or inflated at the surface (just as OWD students are taught to do with modern BCDs), thus creating the adjustable buoyancy lifejacket (ABLJ).

Then someone (possibly Fenzy again) had the idea of attaching the inflation hose to the cylinder air supply and saving all that complicated effort of removing and replacing the scuba mouthpiece.

Then someone had the idea of integrating the cylinder harness and ABLJ into a combined unit--the jacket style BCD. The first one was manufactured by ScubaPro in 1971.

As ever, the 'new' technology was pioneered by cave divers, who used plastic bottles/jerrycans tied to their gear to adjust their buoyancy during cave explorations where they were carrying extra tanks and equipment.

And as ever, diving's heavyweights at the time decried the BCD as a potential deathtrap due to its 'complexity', and its propensity to float an unconscious diver face down at the surface. Despite this, nowadays, nearly every sport diver trains with and dives on BCDs.

Scuba diving is a popular pastime, especially for those who live near bodies of water. There is a lot of scuba gear that you have to either own or rent before you get into it. If you are going to go diving to see if you like it or take lessons you will be coached on all the gear, but it is good to know about it before you go.

The simplest part of a scuba get-up is the bodysuit, which is meant to help keep you warm. Other fairly simple items are the goggles which allow you to see, and the fins, which you need to propel yourself properly. After this the gear gets a little more complicated, but once you know it, you'll get along just fine.

Some people ask what the most important piece of scuba equipment is. The answer is that all of them are important. When you are entering an element that the human body wasn't equipped to go into on its own, you can't think of one piece of equipment as more important than another. You need all of them in tip-top shape to ensure that you have a safe and pleasurable experience.

You need to have a scuba BCD before you dive. BCD stands for buoyancy control device, and it is a vest that everything else attaches to. Basic BCDs are the life-vests that you wear while out boating. Scuba BCDs on the other hand allow you to control your depth. They are not meant to keep you floating, but rather to help you achieve neutral buoyancy. Neutral buoyancy occurs when you weigh the same amount as the water that you are displacing. You can add and remove weights to your BCD to achieve the desired weight. BCDs go on before the air tank, and are a kind of "command center." All your gauges and equipment go into the pockets they sport on it so they are always accessible.

The scuba regulator is the part that makes it possible for you to breathe while diving. Its function is to reduce the pressure of the air coming out of your tank, making it breathable. It also adjusts the pressure of the air as you dive, this ensures that you are always receiving air at the atmospheric pressure, which is necessary for your lungs to be able to inflate.

You will need an air tank for your dives. These are generally made of steel or aluminum. Aluminum is more common, and is almost always what you will rent at a scuba shop. You will also need weights while diving.

Scuba diving is a rather expensive hobby to get into. Once you have all the equipment you should only have to pay for the occasional upgrade and maintenance, but this is a sport where the initial purchases are a lot of money. Because of this, you want to make sure you get the right equipment.

Get advice from your scuba instructor or friends that scuba dive on what brands and types of equipment you should get. Some of the equipment will be more sophisticated than similar models, and you should become familiar with what you need and what you don't.

More complex gauges and systems will cost more money, but unless you are becoming a professional diver, you probably don't them. For the beginning diver, basic equipment made by a good company is generally the best start.
