Before you make a decision about buying certain dive computer, let's answer some common questions about it. In this article you will find basic and general information about these devices and this will help you on the way of choosing the "right one".

Basically, dive computer is a device that monitors and shows you depth, Elapsed Dive Time, temperature, No-Decompression Dive Time Remaining, nitrogen and oxygen loading, and many other things, depending on the model you use, dive mode, and whether you are diving or on surface.

But the main task of the dive computer – is to calculate the nitrogen loading and oxygen toxicity levels and compute the most optimal and the safest surfacing procedure, manage decompression, and the surface interval between the dives. In shorter words – it helps us staying out from getting into the Decompression Sickness as long as we obey safety rules, warnings and alarms.

It simplifies our diving by replacing Dive Planners and Wheels (but it is still a good idea to keep RDP or Wheel as a backup)!

I can mention that all dive computers produced in following mounting options:

computer consoles (Aeris Atmos ai, Mares Puck Air, Suunto Cobra);
wrist dive computers (Oceanic OC1, Cressi Archimede 2, Tusa IQ-950 Zen Air);
wrist units (Mares Icon HD, Uwatec Galileo Sol, Tusa IQ-850 Sapience);
scuba masks (Aeris CompuMask, Oceanic DataMask)

When you dive and go deeper - your safe dive time is decreasing. And if you exceeded No-Decompression Limits (NDLs) – dive computer activates Decompression mode. At that moment you will see the nearest decompression stop depth and decompression time are displayed.

Dive computer constantly monitors our nitrogen loading and oxygen toxicity level and it may give us a warning or alarm if levels come close to certain maximum allowed.

And, as well, if our ascent rate is faster than it should be – dive computer will activate Ascent Rate alarm in order for us to slow the ascent.

When we are on surface, in order to make another dive, we have to calculate the nitrogen loading level of our organisms by using Recreational Dive Planner, but if we have a computer - we just need to follow its recommendations. It will help us to perform this task by counting Desaturation Time and No-Fly Time as well.

Many modern scuba dive computers have possibility of downloading your diving history into the computer, using USB or infrared interface and special software. And you may even download from your PC into the dive computer coloured or grey-scale bitmap pictures (Mares Icon HD, Uwatec Galileo Sol and Galileo Luna)!

Depending on the model of the dive computer, you may have following dive modes:

Air;
Nitrox:
Gauge;
FREEdive

Some of the scuba dive computers may be programmed for up to 3 gas mixes and with possibility of switching between them during a single dive, and dive computer HelO2 by Suunto, may be programmed for up to 8 gas mixes, and can be used for diving with Air, Nitrox, and Trimix.

Next feature is the air-integration. You will meet three options here:

hose air-integrated dive computer;
hoseless air-integrated dive computer;
dive computer without air integration

With hoseless (wireless) air integration you need to have a transmitter installed on the regulator. Many of hoseless air-integrated models have Buddy Pressure Check feature, which means that you may check air pressure of your 'buddy' using your own dive computer if your buddy's transmitter is correctly paired with your computer.

Another important feature is compensation for Altitude diving. Many dive computers these days automatically compensate for altitude diving and give you adjusted no-decompression times and depths, according to your current altitude. In some models you may set up manually altitude in certain ranges, like in Suunto and Mares brands.

It is worth to mention here Personal Conservative Factor adjustment. Just as an example – if Aeris dive computers allow us to set this factor just to ON/OFF state, Mares and Suunto models give us possibility to increase or decrease level of conservatism by choosing between highest and lowest levels. And this gives us possibility to set our computer for either liberal or conservative diving.

These days majority of dive computers are made with the diver replaceable battery option, and some of them have 'hot swap' feature, which means that you need to replace battery within 8 seconds in order to keep nitrogen and oxygen calculations for next dives and other data stored in dive computer, like some settings, for example.

When you will be doing research to get the dive computer that is the best for you – go for one, which has ‘diver replaceable battery' option. It will save you time and money, and also you will be able to continue your diving adventure without any interruptions.

Some of the models, like Oceanic OC1, Tusa IQ-900, Tusa IQ-950, UWATEC Galileo Luna, UWATEC Galileo SOL and few others have Data Retention function, which means that we may replace the battery at any time between the dives, without losing any nitrogen or oxygen calculations, because all data is stored indefinitely.

So, as a conclusion, all of those features, significant or not very, as you may think of them, have only one the most important benefit for us – keep us on the safe side and avoid Decompression Sickness (DCS).

If you're checking to see if it's legal, and how you plan to punish me, please allow me to explain. I'm a PADI Master Instructor of Scuba Diving, and I spend my working days teaching scuba in Thailand. One of the most rewarding experiences for my diving students' is shooting great photographs of aquatic marine life.

Making underwater photographs in Thailand has many advantages for divers searching for that 'perfect shot';

Clear blue water
Warm water averaging 28 degrees centigrade
Pristine Coral Reef formations
Established Diving Centers and Scuba Equipment Shops

 
The most popular tourist areas for scuba diving in Thailand are Pattaya, Phuket and Koh Samui. These resorts offer great fun and excitement for beginners and certified divers. Whether it's vibrant fish life, colourful corals or sunken ship wrecks, the camera won't stop clicking while you're scuba diving in Thailand. I've captured pictures of Seahorses and giant Gorgonian Sea Fans in Phuket, Black tip reef Sharks in Koh Samui, and World War 11 ship wrecks in Pattaya.

Todays modern camera equipment has changed the way that scuba divers 'shoot' fish underwater. The traditional film camera is still used by many diving professionals, but digital underwater cameras have made underwater photography both accessible and affordable to the majority of scuba divers. Learning to Scuba Dive is not difficult for most people who are comfortable in the water, but snapping great photos under water takes novices some time to learn. One of the most important attributes is good buoyancy control. Apart from all the obvious advantages that neutral, relaxed buoyancy has for scuba diving, if you're trying to compose that image of the tiny yellow blob, commonly known as a Frogfish, being able to hover almost motionless just centimetres away from your subject is what sets you apart from the norm. Also, as recreational scuba divers descend, water absorbs colour. Starting with Red, Orange and then Yellow, and as you dive deeper, you'll lose Green and Blue. Strobe lights help to restore some of the colour that's lost, which is how the professionals obtain fantastic vibrant colours from their images.

I fully appreciate that not every diver has a passion for taking pictures of the new world that they've discovered. Many divers are more fascinated by ship wrecks, perhaps diving deep or making dives using nitrox (an increased amount of oxygen) but most of my scuba buddies have admitted that they are very keen to share the wonders on the underwater world by shooting pictures of fish and other marine life. With modern technology as a friend, it's now possible to store and share underwater images with your family, friends and even the general public via social sites and the internet. The dive may have been the most amazing experience that you've had, but it's so much more powerful to share the adventures with those for whom it may not be possibly to try scuba diving. PADI scuba courses teach student divers how to capture and share underwater photographs, and the Digital Underwater Photography course is now available to all scuba divers from the age of ten.

Private scuba lessons are becoming more popular now, especially in Thailand. Taking a dive course with you own private scuba instructor offers exclusivity, the personal touch, and usually more flexibility. So to enrol in the shooting fish course, otherwise known as the PADI DUP (digital underwater photography) course, you do need to be a certified diver of at least ten years old. But be prepared for some underwater fun that diving in Pattaya has to offer. The coral reefs are shallower here than other dive sites in Thailand, and the other advantage is that scuba diving in Pattaya is available year round because the Gulf of Thailand tends to be sheltered from the southwest monsoons that arrive in Phuket from June until October. Pattaya is not a famous diving destination, but beginners and experienced divers will be rewarded with some of the best wreck diving in Thailand. So, clean up the lens, replace the batteries and make sure that you have a watertight seal, because when you dive in Pattaya the camera never lies. You really can see Turtles, Seahorses and Sharks, and the wreck dives will leave you breathless (pardon the pun) as you drift along US Landing Crafts from the Second World War that were intentionally sunk by the Thai Navy for the local Thai divers and tourists on a scuba diving holiday in Pattaya.

Whether you are interested in technical diving or going pro some time in the future, you will need a dive log showing you have enough experience to move to the next level. Some resorts even insist on seeing dive logs before they will take you to some more advanced dive sites. In these days of increasing litigation it is good for them and for you to know that your fellow divers are experienced enough for the dive.
2. you can track how much you breathe and see it improve

We all want to spend as much time underwater as we can. Usually are limits are set by how fast we breathe our air. It is really nice to see how much we relax over time and our breathing slows to give us more time underwater.
3. its a journal of your diving adventures you can show and tell

You come back from your vacation buzzing with great stories of your dives. Pull out your dive log with your photos and you can answer all the ‘how deep/how long/how warm’ questions. When you get your buddy to sign your log book you can put names to faces on your group photos as well!
4. the quickest way to check the weights you need for different kit

If you dive throughout the year in different waters you will be snugged up on some and minimal on others. Why waste any time on your first day of your vacation testing for weight when you can look it up directly from last year?

Some of them are funky, some plain. Shop chops (or stamps) are only available from the dive resort after a dive. How many do you have?

You never know when you will bump into a marine biologist and you can whip out your dive log and impress them with your drawing!

Do you have a favourite vacation destination? If you go back to the same dive sites often, just a few notes in your dive log will help you track changes in fish life and environmental changes.

How many? how deep? what countries? how often? Its all there with a dive log. With a paper log you have to add things up yourself but there are many software dive logs and online dive logs that will do it automatically for you. It’s not everyone’s bag, but well all love to compare and discuss so let some somewhere do it for you and you always have the information at hand.
