What should I do if I see a shark when snorkeling or diving?
If you're diving and submerged, sharks don't tend to be a problem. Underwater we appear as relatively large creatures with bubbles coming out, bubbles which you don't see very often. As a result most there have been very few incidents of people attacked by sharks while diving.
The surface can be another story. When you hear about surfers getting attacked it is generally because they look like seals in dark wetsuits sitting on the surface. As a snorkeler you may appear similar so your best bet is to head away from the shark while maintaining your calm. Even with all the attacks on surfers, there are still few documented attacks against snorkelers.
Keep in mind that there are thousands upon thousands of people diving and snorkeling every year who come into contact with sharks and continue on uninterrupted, even pausing to take photos. Only a small handful of sharks are known to be aggressive towards man and even within these species, most encounters are harmless. I know many divers who take pride in the photos they took of great whites and they're very much alive.
I've seen many sharks both snorkeling and diving including a few semi-aggressive species and none got anywhere near me. It can still be a scary experience at first but the reality is that most of the time you're going to see smaller sharks a good distance away who are not interested in you.
If you do happen to be traveling to an area known for aggressive sharks like the great barrier reef, check with a local dive shop, hotel or other credible guide for local information on the shark population and safety tips. Chances are you won't see anything and if you do you'll probably end up with a cool story, but the locals will be able to tell you if there have been any incidents and how to best protect yourself with that particular type of shark.

If you're just lazily floating in 90 degree water, not very many.
OTOH, if you're swimming vigorously and fighting surge and wave action, treading water, etc., in cold water, it probably equals what you'd expend by running (and you can find that by searching).

Grand Cayman seventh heaven for families and other sun-lovers
Any country that has a turtle in pirate garb as its logo should be a fun place for families to play.
It's the same mixture of animals and adventure that Disney movies have weaned us on for generations (think Pirates of the Caribbean meets The Little Mermaid). But the Cayman Islands are the real thing.
Grand Cayman Island's Seven Mile Beach is famous for its crescent of pearly white sand blending into the almost blinding "Cayman Blue" water. The famous beach (which is 5.2 miles long) was recently named "the Caribbean's Best Beach" by Caribbean Travel and Life Magazine. And the little remaining shoreline land left is currently selling for over $30,000 US per foot?
Cemetery Reef, among others, lies just offshore making the water calm, and excellent for snorkeling, swimming and lazing in the sun. The average temperature of the water is 80°F (27°C) in winter. At its south end, Georgetown, the capital of the Cayman Islands, is a charming community of 20,000.
Like shopping? Georgetown is a jewelry shopping Mecca and is lined with funky restaurants where you can sample some local Caymanian cuisine, such as lip-smacking barbecued jerk ribs and chicken. Not to be missed is the fish market right on the beach where charismatic locals spin sea-yarns and sell fresh-that-day mahi mahi, snapper, and wahoo.
It's fun meeting the overwhelmingly friendly locals and nothing will make you feel immersed in the culture quicker than shopping for, and making your own, culinary creation. A feast of shrimp and mahi mahi with Cayman lime butter, or honey rum snapper along with key lime or coconut pie will have you fantasizing about moving here. The easiest way to get this "home away from home" feeling, is to stay in one of the many fully equipped condos along Seven Mile Beach.
Home away from home
While Seven Mile Beach is home to some of the biggest hotel and resort chains in the world, there is another option that fits most families much better. The condo. Along with full sized fridges where you can stock snacks and drinks, most have washers and dryers, TVs and DVDs, as well as separate bedrooms where kids can be tucked in at night, letting their parents have some quiet time and a night cap out on their sun deck. With privacy, space and convenience, families can spread out and relax in their own little oasis in paradise. Couples can even share a unit and the cost.
One of the most well appointed and secluded examples of a condominium resort is the Aqua Bay Club, located on the western end of Seven Mile Beach. The resort has the feel of an isolated island setting, yet it's located just minutes away from all the services anyone could need. And the sea view, is spectacular - the name is certainly appropriate.

What is involved in becoming certified in Scuba diving (cost-certification-equipment needed)?
As I read about becoming PADI certified for open water dives, I see different prices for the classroom and pool dives, plus are additional dives required (with extra fees?) neccessary for certification and why do I have to buy certain equipment of my own for certification, like snorkel, fins, boots and mask. Is this typical? Why do I have to purchase this stuff? How much does the gear cost? And I have two teenage daughters plus my husband interested in doing this for our cruise in August- should we pursue this, or just do the "beginners dive" that the cruise offers?
well when iwas taking my course i had to buy my own mask snorkel boots fins becasue this a necessitiy when your diving and you should always buy your own regulator and B.C. becasue these things not all dive sites have them to rent and you wouldnt want to share all that equipment that other people have used i have everything except my dive tank which you dont have to buy beavuse you can rent that anywhere but ive sometimes left some of my equiment at home and find it to very fruasting that i have to rent all this equpiment its really qutie annoying not to have your equipment as for the cruise dive you should only do it if you dont plan to go diving alot becaus the diving equipment does tend to get kinda of expensive but prices vary on what kinda brands you buy hope thid helps

I am looking to buy good diving gear?
can someone please recommend a good mask(i have a bigger head), fins and snorkel. I heard split tail fins are the best.
Purely personal preference, don't buy a mask without trying a few - must be comfortable and easy to clear - most good dive shops will let you try them on, if they won't go somewhere else. Same with the snorkel - I don't do much snorkelling now - so it is only for on the surface at the end of a dive if I ran out of air.
There are so many different fin styles, again find a set that you are comfortable with and don't fall for the gimmicky ones

Which of Hawaii's islands should my fiance and I choose to travel to?
We're going to Hawaii on our honeymoon. We want to go for hikes, learn to surf, go scuba diving and snorkelling and swim on beaches that are crystal clear. What would be the best island for us to visit?
Any resorts you can suggest?
I personally recommend Oahu for a number of reasons:
1) it has everything all on one island, hiking, surfing for beginners, scuba/snorkeling, great beaches to choose from and so much more. There is literally something for every taste and budget!
2) if you want a resort feeling there are several on Waikiki that will treat you like royalty and make your trip well worth it. I recommend the Hilton Hawaiian Village or the Outrigger Waikiki - they both have great locations, rooms, dining, beach access, pools and amazing concierge that will help you book any tour/trip you want and have other really good info for you to use!
