What are Dive Computer Algorithms?
The dive computer is used to calculate your maximum dive time which allows for a longer and safer dive. The dive computer as took over from the dive table as the diving tool to calculate all your necessary parameters to enjoy scuba diving.

Dive computers use algorithms to calculate these safe diving limits. They will make adjustments for both fast tissue groups and slow tissue groups. It uses this information to estimate the nitrogen in your body. Based on the amount of time you've been submerged and your depth, from this the computer then calculates how much longer you can safely remain underwater.

Different Type of Algorithms
Algorithms vary by model from each manufacturer and only a few algorithms are actually used. Some algorithm used may also be a modification of an existing algorithm. When you want to consider buying your next dive computer, the main feature to look at is the algorithm that the air decompression limit monitor uses.

Algorithms with different manufactures use some varying factors in their algorithms such as mentioned with fast and slow tissue groups. The solubility, permeability, and blood contact for a given tissue, say for example a kidney, is called a "tissue compartment or tissue group." Dive computers use these "tissue compartments" to simulate the effect of a gas on your body at depth. The more "tissue compartments" a computer measures, the more accurate (theoretically) the computer can gauge the effect of a dive on your body. 9 to 12 compartments is fairly standard, but a few consumer models have 16 or more.

Here are four of the main algorithms used for dive computers:

Group 1: Haldane/Spencer Algorithm
The Haldane/Spencer model uses test results from PADI's Diving Science and Technology and was developed by Rogers and Powell. Within their algorithm they use 12 separate tissue compartments. Oceanic and Sherwood use this algorithm model for their dive computers.

Group 2: Modified Haldanian Algorithm
This algorithm model was used by Mares and is based on nine tissue compartments. Now the latest Mares dive computers use the Reduced Gradient Bubble Model.

Group 3: Suunto Reduced Gradient Bubble Algorithm
This model is based in part on work by Wienke and Hamilton and uses nine tissue compartments. Suunto were the first to use the RGDM and now other manufactures are starting to use it too. The big difference of this algorithm is they consider micro bubbles that are in the blood stream as a result of nitrogen build up. The theory was they consider that these micro bubbles are a precondition of larger bubbles which can lead to DCS.

Group 4: Uwatec Buehlmann ZH-L8 ADT Algorithm and the ZH-L8 ADT MB.
This algorithm model uses eight tissue compartments and has been recently updated with two additional letters, the Buhlmann adaptive model has been expanded to be called the ZH-L8 ADT MB which stands for micro bubble. This algorithm is used by Uwatec and Scubapro.

Short fall of Algorithms
Algorithms may not be able to account for age, previous injury, ambient temperature, body type, alcohol consumption/dehydration, and patent foramen ovale(hole in the heart).

Which Algorithm is the best?
Removing of factors like cost, looks, other features etc then the more "tissue compartments" a computer measures, the more accurate (theoretically) the computer can gauge the effect of a dive on your body. 9 to 12 compartments are fairly standard nowadays, but a few dive computers are now using 16 compartments.

Even if two algorithms have the same results, manufactures will add there own factor of safety so they can set there dive computers to aggressive or conservative. An aggressive computer gives more bottom time than a conservative dive computer, and it's wise to understand the properties of one's own dive computer to ensure it fits the skill and comfort level expected.

Hong Kong is not just skyscrapers, as country parks cover over 41,000 hectares what works out to be approx 38% of the entire city.

The city of Hong Kong has a larger community of divers, although most like travel to South East Asia, but still divers still dive in their local waters around Hong Kong mostly in the summer.

Sai Kung East Country Park has to be some of the best diving is located of the beaches of Tai Long Wan. It is quite hard to imagine you are in the city when you see the beach.

Sai Kung is the drop of point for diving with many day trips along the coast, there are some 200 islands located around the island and with over 300 species of fishes and some 80 corals to found.

Local operators run overnight trips to islands in the China waters, islands like Pedro Bianco which lies 85km east of Hong Kong. But even the best sites in South China Sea has been plunder by fisherman and many locals say the destruction has made long trips not worthwhile.

There the visibility can be variable and can be sometimes terrible making diving difficult and outside the summer months the waters around Hong Kong can be chilly.

The City is famous for shopping and same goes for diving equipment and is one of the best locations in Asia, prices are reasonable so stock up while you are there.

Scuba diving in China is a young industry and they have some unusual locations to dive from such as the sunken Lion City, which is a village that was submerged by a lake and it is even possible to dive the great Wall of China too.

Cambodia is located in the Gulf of Thailand between the countries of Thailand and Vietnam. Cambodia is a new diving frontier and has a few dive centres and therefore the country offers a real chance to explore dive sites. There will be plenty of chances to dive unmapped dive sites and even some not discovered yet.

The diving tourism is located around Shanoukville which is also known as Kompong Som. The town as rapidly grown but is blessed by white sand beaches wrapped around the headland.

Located just off shore from Shanoukville are the islands of Koh Rong, Koh Kon and Koh Rong Samloem which are known as the Kompong Som Island group. You can find more islands further south which are visited by snorkelling trips.

The Royal group of islands of Koh Tang and Koh Prins offer some of the best sites for divers with good coral growth and some occasional big creatures. String Ray Alley as you guessed as plenty of String Rays to keep you happy.

Koh Tang and Koh Prins islands are located several hours by boat from Shanoukville and are best visited on an overnight trip which can be slightly difficult to arrange but they are less affected as other islands that have been dynamited nearer the shore.

Most of the country coast from Koh Kong up to the Thai border is virtually unexplored and get for the adventurous divers who like explore.

As with most spots along the Thai gulf coast the diving is seasonal with variable visibility. The dry season from October to November thought June offer the best diving, as low rainfall offers better visibility.

Australia needs no introduction when it comes to diving as it probably has the most famous diving location on the earth called the Great Barrier Reef. The Great Barrier Reef stretches for a total of 2300km from Queensland to Papua New Guinea.

The Great Barrier Reef is not one reef but a mass of 2900 connected reefs which makes it the largest reef system in the world and is home to over 1500 fish species and 400 kinds of corals and has over 30 species of whales and dolphins.

The Reef has been a marine park since 1975 and can be divided in 4 sections, the northern area is a little visited section, the popular Cairns and central section and the southerly Capricorn section in the south. Each year almost two million visits go to the Barrier Reef and will use Cairns and Port Douglas for day trips and liveaboards.

Cairns liveaboard operates say there is a chance to see Minke whales in the cooler months of the years which are the month of June and July. As the Minkes are curious the dive boats will just anchor and wait for the whales to come.

Off the coast of Townsville is the wreck of the Yongala which was a luxury yacht that sunk in 1911, the 109m wreck ranks as one of the best dive sites in the world.

The diving extends down south into New South Wales and Victoria. Lord Howe Island located near Sydney is one of the southern most coral reefs in the world.

The waters get cooler as the further south we go and the waters of Melbourne you will find fur seals and dolphins as well as many wrecks. Around Tasmania you find the kelp forests and sponge gardens and also have taken there fair share of wrecks too.

In the western side of Australia you will find Ningaloo reef that is famous for its whale sharks, the reef is from the Coral Bay to Exmouth.

Divers looking for sometime more extreme might want look at the caves under the desert of Nullarbor Plains.

Malaysia has a long and extensive coastline and the scuba diving is good along both coasts of Malaysia as well as East Malaysia on the Malaysian Borneo.

On Sabah, is the world renowned dive location of Sipdan Island that is normally ranked as one of the best diving locations in Asia. Previously you could stay on Sipdan but recently the government closed them down and now you will need to stay on the nearby resorts.

Staying nearby is still worth the trip and Sipdan is an oceanic island which means it raises from the ocean bed, you can walk of the beach and then dive a 600m wall dive.

Other islands nearby are worth a visit with some good muck diving at Mabul, where you can dive at a old oil rig which has many frog fish and large moral eels too.

The main land of Malaysia has all year round diving as one side of the coast is dry and the other has monsoon rains. The islands along the east coast are popular location with many travels coming up from Singapore. The islands are from the Thai border down to Palau Redang, Palau Aur and Palau Tioman.

On the west coast of the main land is Langkawi which is just north of Penang which is a good spot for snorkelling and divers alike, with a marine park and some 17 dive sites too.

Another nice location to dive is Layang Layang which is around 300km from the Borneo coast and is an island and 13 reefs, the dive season for this island is from MArch to September but most divers go for the hammerhead sharks in the month of July.

One of the most important things you can learn from scuba diving is to wash your equipment and gear. Its very important to maintain your gear to get maximum life span and ensure your gear performs safely when diving.

Washing Station Setup
The simplest way to prepare your washing station is to fill a large bathtub at home which will be filled with fresh water. If no bathtub then a simple hose or sink will work just as well. Many dive shops or resorts will have two tubs; one tub will be water for general gear such as wetsuits and other equipment while the other will be for specialist equipment such as cameras and diver computers and any other sensitive gadgets.

Where possible if your gear has a lot of sand on it is to hose it down before dunking it in the tub.

Regulator
The first thing before you start to wash your regulator is to ensure your dust cap is secure as any water that enters the first stage will cause water to enter the internal parts and cause damage.
Before you replace the dust cap you will need to dry the dust cap and the opening of the first stage. The easiest way is to use your tank to blow air onto the two components and this will dry the parts adequately, alternatively you may use a dry cloth to do the job.

Once this is done you need to place the regulator in freshwater for 5 minutes, avoid pressing the purge button as this will allow water to enter the first stage. It best to rotate any moving parts to ensure there is no salt which in the long run will rust. Once Its been soaked and cleaned hang it up and dry.

BCD
Washing a BCD comes in two parts, the internal and external of the BCD. The external is straight forward and can be dunked and soaked in a tub of freshwater to wash any salt off the BCD.
Step two as mentioned is the internal of the BCD, this will need to be done as small quantities of saltwater will enter while diving, and this will turn to salt crystals which over time will cause the values to malfunction and the internal bladder to tear.

So here is how to do it, Press the deflate button on the BCD and allow freshwater to enter to approximate 25%, afterwards shake the BCD and allow the water the wash around all corners. Once you are happy you have washed the internal the best method is to use the exhaust values to empty the water which at the same time will clean them too.

Now slight inflate the BCD to ensure the internal bladder does not stick together when drying and hang out to dry.

Dive Computer and Camera
Wash your dive computer in clean freshwater and not the same water you have washed your other gear as detergents and sand will damage your sensitive equipment. Soak this equipment for a longer time and press all the buttons ensure there is no salt trapped. If possible brush the surfaces with a toothbrush to hep clean it better, but don't use on the sensors or lenses area as it could damage it.

Wetsuit, Booties, and Gloves
Your wetsuit, booties, and gloves need to be washed in freshwater and you may also like to add a wetsuit detergent. Submerge the items in the water and turn them inside out too and keep washing until clean. Once clean hang out and allow to dry.

Fins, Mask, Snorkel, and Other Equipment
All other equipment should be submerged in fresh water, dunked up and down until clean and hung up to dry.

Tips: to prolong the life of your gear don't hang out in direct sunlight as it will make the equipment discolour and reduce the life span.

Located among 50 islands with the US Virgin Islands are the three islands of St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix where some of the best diving in the region can be found. Accessing these islands is simple with flights from many major US airports daily.

St. Thomas

The dive centre will all take you to the waters of Pillsbury Sound between St. Thomas and St. John to dive sites which have several shipwrecks encrusted with bright sponges and coral. One of the more famous is the "General Rogers" which is a 100 plus foot US Coast Guard buoy which was sunk there to form an artificial reef which is located in around 60 feet of water. The reef is established on the coast guard buoy which is formed some lovely Orange cup coral and others with an abundance of fishes such as angelfish and grunts to name a few.

Probably the best diving in the Virgin Islands is Sail Rock which towers up 125 feet in the air off the West End of St Thomas and is teeming with jacks, wrasse, barracuda, turtles and others.

St. John

Congo Cay and Carval Rock are located between the islands St. John and St. Thomas and are two popular diving sites and is home to many turtles swarming silversides, cruising reef sharks, and waving sea rods and gorgonians. The swim-through is a must do which tower is between two towering rock faces is covered with vibrant marine life.

Congo Cay's is an opposite dive to Carval Rock with a drift dive though some amazing weathered; the dive site has its own resident sting rays creating a lovely dive. Both dive sites can be done from a basic level but if the weather is bad only experienced divers can dive.

St. Croix

North side of St. Croix is known to be one of the best wall dives in the Caribbean, the wall starts only 100 yards of the beach line and drops to several thousand feet, there are around 20 dive sites located along the wall with varying natures features such as pinnacles, ledges, walls and caverns.

All the Dive shops on all three islands of St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix will offer resort courses, complete certification classes and rental equipment. Many package deals are available with local hotels and dive operators combining for a single price package. Accommodations range from 5-star resorts and villas to small, family run inns and hotels. Camping is even available for those who want to rough it a bit outdoors.

If you have been considering learning to dive and you want to know more about what's involved in the basic open water scuba diving course, below I will try to answer your questions.

What is the Open Water Course?

As mentioned above the basic scuba diving certification course will be taught by all certification agencies. They are basically the same across different agencies and will only differ slightly but they will all cover the same basic skills and knowledge you will need to be able to dive safely.

Who can enrol for the Course?

You can begin to learn to dive from as early as 10 years old but this will maybe be 12 years old depending on the country you are at and this will be classified as the Junior Open Water Course. You will need to be at least 15 years old to enrol in the Open Water Course directly, but if you learn as a junior open water course you will be automatically upgraded to Open Water Diver when you reach the age of 15 years old.

The other requirements are you will need to be physically fit and have a basic level of swimming skill.

How long does the Course take?

This will become an important question as we are typically busy and dont have much time to spare. Normally an average vacation course will take around 3 to 5 days and will depend on the time and effort put in each day. Courses can also be done over weeks or months which will generally fit into your hectic schedule after work or on the weekend.

What will be covered during the course?

Basic Knowledge Development
When the course starts you will be given text books, videos or even learn online, you can study alone before starting the lectures. Areas to be covered in your course will be basics of diving techniques, how diving will affect your body, diving safety precautions, equipment selection and how to maintenance, planning your dives, and preview the skills you will learn in the water. A test will be conducted at the end of the course.

Confined Water Training
This will be your first step into the water with your equipment, but as you have no skills it will be conducted in a safe environment such as a swimming pool. Your training will start at shallow water where you can stand and start the basic skills, as you progress in confidence you will lead to deeper water the skills will continue until you successfully complete all the skills and drills required to advance to the open water.

Open Water Training
This will be your first dive in the open water, and you will take around 4 or more dives and you will go over all the skills and drills that you previously learnt in the swimming pool until you are completely confident and can perform them in real diving situations. By the end of the open water part of the course you will be happy diving with the fishes.

What does the course qualify you to do?

When you're certified as an Open Water diver you will be able to dive to 18meters when you dive with a fellow diver with a minimum qualification the same as yours. You do not have to be accompanied by a dive master of instructor but this is recommended. Also you will be eligible to do your Advanced Open water where you can dive at night and dive to 40m.

Do I have to renew my certification in future?

The certification is a life long certificate and does not need to be renewed. However, it is recommended that if you have not dived for a while or feel you lack the confidence in your skills you should do a Scuba Review. This review is a short refresher course with a professional that can be integrated into your first dive.

Risk Factors
We are not all at the same risk, even if we dive to the same depth and for the same diving conditions as every diver will have their own level of DCS. Therefore two people doing the same dive might end up with one with DCS and the other with no symptoms. Not all the factors are fully understood but the factors listed below are generally understood to increase the chances or risk of getting decompression sickness:
Gender - As women have a higher body fat content than males it should be theoretically females will have higher chance to get DCS. However this has yet to be proven in studies.

Age - The older you are the higher at risk you are from DCS due to less efficient circulatory and respiratory systems.

Body Fat - Nitrogen absorbs easier into fat than muscle, therefore a diver who is overweight will be at higher risk than others.

Fitness Level - A fitter person is able to tolerate more physical stress, including Decompression Sickness.

Exercise - exercise can work both ways with DCS, both positive and negative. To explain a little further, if you exercise at least 12 hours before a dive your body produces proteins within the body which decreases the risk of Decompression sickness. Whereas if you exercise less than 12 hours before a dive can raise the number of gas micronuclei on which bubbles form and this increases the risk of Decompression Sickness. Exercise immediately after a dive increases the risk of bubbles forming as blood pressure is increased and bubbles can more easily be transferred from the venous to the arterial side of the circulatory system.

Alcohol - taking some alcohol before or after a dive can increase circulation which in turn will help the tissues load with gas. Alcohol can help to dilate capillaries which can help the rate of nitrogen released.

Dehydration - When we are dehydrated it causes less blood for gas exchange which decreases the off gas ability of our bodies which will increase the risk of DCS.

Cold - due to the cold water increase the risk of DCS, as the body works harder to keep warm as it becomes colder. When the body is warm it is easier to off gases and hence older harder to off these gases.

Altitude and flying after diving - when the atmospheric pressure changes it increases the chance of DCS so it is highly recommended to not fly until the gases are removed from your body.

Hole in the Heart - We are born with a hole in the heart which will close up within a year of being born, but in a few people this does not. It is found that a large proportion of divers who suffered from Decompression Sickness had a Hole in the heart.

Prevention
The prevention methods to reduce the risk of decompression sickness are much about the opposite to the risks:

• Don't push beyond your limits and due the correct safety stops
• Keep yourself physically fit and healthy
• Ascend slowly for every dive.
• Don't exercise close to diving
• Don't go to altitude or fly immediately after diving
• Keep hydrated
• Don't drink alcohol before or after diving

Treatment
Immediate begin treatment with oxygen therapy and other basic first aid if required. Follow up as quickly as possible by recompression treatment in a recompression chamber. When treating Decompression Sickness the delay in beginning recompression treatment can be the biggest single cause of residual effects.
