If you're checking to see if it's legal, and how you plan to punish me, please allow me to explain. I'm a PADI Master Instructor of Scuba Diving, and I spend my working days teaching scuba in Thailand. One of the most rewarding experiences for my diving students' is shooting great photographs of aquatic marine life.

Making underwater photographs in Thailand has many advantages for divers searching for that 'perfect shot';

Clear blue water
Warm water averaging 28 degrees centigrade
Pristine Coral Reef formations
Established Diving Centers and Scuba Equipment Shops

The most popular tourist areas for scuba diving in Thailand are Pattaya, Phuket and Koh Samui. These resorts offer great fun and excitement for beginners and certified divers. Whether it's vibrant fish life, colourful corals or sunken ship wrecks, the camera won't stop clicking while you're scuba diving in Thailand. I've captured pictures of Seahorses and giant Gorgonian Sea Fans in Phuket, Black tip reef Sharks in Koh Samui, and World War 11 ship wrecks in Pattaya.

Todays modern camera equipment has changed the way that scuba divers 'shoot' fish underwater. The traditional film camera is still used by many diving professionals, but digital underwater cameras have made underwater photography both accessible and affordable to the majority of scuba divers. Learning to Scuba Dive is not difficult for most people who are comfortable in the water, but snapping great photos under water takes novices some time to learn. One of the most important attributes is good buoyancy control. Apart from all the obvious advantages that neutral, relaxed buoyancy has for scuba diving, if you're trying to compose that image of the tiny yellow blob, commonly known as a Frogfish, being able to hover almost motionless just centimetres away from your subject is what sets you apart from the norm. Also, as recreational scuba divers descend, water absorbs colour. Starting with Red, Orange and then Yellow, and as you dive deeper, you'll lose Green and Blue. Strobe lights help to restore some of the colour that's lost, which is how the professionals obtain fantastic vibrant colours from their images.

I fully appreciate that not every diver has a passion for taking pictures of the new world that they've discovered. Many divers are more fascinated by ship wrecks, perhaps diving deep or making dives using nitrox (an increased amount of oxygen) but most of my scuba buddies have admitted that they are very keen to share the wonders on the underwater world by shooting pictures of fish and other marine life. With modern technology as a friend, it's now possible to store and share underwater images with your family, friends and even the general public via social sites and the internet. The dive may have been the most amazing experience that you've had, but it's so much more powerful to share the adventures with those for whom it may not be possibly to try scuba diving. PADI scuba courses teach student divers how to capture and share underwater photographs, and the Digital Underwater Photography course is now available to all scuba divers from the age of ten.

Private scuba lessons are becoming more popular now, especially in Thailand. Taking a dive course with you own private scuba instructor offers exclusivity, the personal touch, and usually more flexibility. So to enrol in the shooting fish course, otherwise known as the PADI DUP (digital underwater photography) course, you do need to be a certified diver of at least ten years old. But be prepared for some underwater fun that diving in Pattaya has to offer. The coral reefs are shallower here than other dive sites in Thailand, and the other advantage is that scuba diving in Pattaya is available year round because the Gulf of Thailand tends to be sheltered from the southwest monsoons that arrive in Phuket from June until October. Pattaya is not a famous diving destination, but beginners and experienced divers will be rewarded with some of the best wreck diving in Thailand. So, clean up the lens, replace the batteries and make sure that you have a watertight seal, because when you dive in Pattaya the camera never lies. You really can see Turtles, Seahorses and Sharks, and the wreck dives will leave you breathless (pardon the pun) as you drift along US Landing Crafts from the Second World War that were intentionally sunk by the Thai Navy for the local Thai divers and tourists on a scuba diving holiday in Pattaya.

Have you ever thought you might be interested in scuba diving? Scuba is a recreational sport that many people admire, and plan to explore, but too few actually take action and become certified. Many people are afraid the process will be too difficult, or too expensive. In reality, however, scuba diving is something that people of nearly all ages and physique can enjoy, and starting out is not really much more expensive than any other sport.

Getting Started
To begin enjoying your life as a scuba diver, everyone has to start by taking the basic open water diving course. In this course, you will learn all the basics and get a little bit of supervised diving experience before going out alone. A certified instructor will teach you safety signals, practices, and assorted precautions that all divers need to understand. You will also learn about common mistakes and potential injuries involved in scuba diving, and how to prevent injury to yourself and your dive buddies. Courses are taught and certified through one of several certification authorities. The major ones are PADI, NAUI, and SSI, but there are many others. You will encounter many people with all sorts of opinions on what agency is better and why, but realistically, you get the same information from whichever you choose. Typically, one particular scuba shop will only teach material from a single certification authority. Rather than focus on learning under one authorities curriculum, you should find a scuba shop in your area that you like, with friendly people, and then go with what they teach. You can find local shops in almost any town online or in the yellow pages.

Limitless Possibilities!
Scuba diving is something people of nearly any physical build and age can engage in, and you can enjoy it in just about any state in the US. Obviously, ocean diving is the most popular, but lakes, natural springs, and quarry’s offer some great diving experiences nationwide, and even around the world! If you cover the basics, and find that diving is something that really interests you, there are certainly many more areas to explore. For example, you can expand your education to include cave diving, wreck diving, which is diving through wrecked ships, and even advanced techniques like rescue or forensic diving. With all of the possible angles, scuba diving is an activity that can be enjoyed for many years as a hobby, or pursued as a robust career.

Scuba season is over? I don’t think so!

As the holidays speed towards us like a freight train, and the waters turn cold.  Many of our thoughts turn from Scuba diving to other projects and endeavors.  For many, the dive season has come to a close and their gear is dried and stored, waiting for that January trip to warmer waters.

Just because the temperatures outside are a little colder doesn’t mean we should lose focus on our passion for Scuba diving.  In fact, there are plenty of things that you can do to keep your head in the proverbial Scuba game.  After all, you don’t want those skills you developed over the summer to rust.

Following is a list of tips and ideas to keep you in the water (both mentally and physically):

Take a refresher course.  Dive shops offer group and private refreshers to keep folks in the water and their skills fresh.  Also look for open pool nights or demo nights as a way of keeping in the water at your local dive shop.

Buy a dry suit.  Dry suit diving is a great way to keep in the water throughout the year.

Take a non-diving course.  Even though you are not in the water, a non-diving course is a great way to keep your head under virtual water.  You are learning new skills and meeting future dive buddies.

Take a warm water vacation.  At least once, during the winter, I find my way to warmer climates and tropical reefs.  It’s a great way to recharge the batteries and do 10 or 15 dives.  Can’t take a week off in the middle of the winter, I am sure you can find a long weekend and a cheap dive boat within a two or three hour flight.

Start a workout regimen.  Being physically fit will help you improve your diving, air consumption and enjoyment. Not only that, but you will reap the other benefits of living a healthier lifestyle. Focus on cardiovascular and core exercises.  Be careful, if you lose too much weight, you may end up having to buy a new wetsuit in the spring.  A great fitness idea for Scuba is swimming.  Find a good gym, with a heated indoor pool.

Get social with other divers.  Many cities have shops or groups that host monthly dive club or meet and greet “get-togethers”.  Other social channels include online communities and “boards”.  These activities are a great way to learn what is happening in the dive community and meet new divers.

Read everything you can get your hands on.  There are many regional and national Scuba magazines, online news and media sites, training manuals, books and more.  The more you read, the more you learn.  Reading about Scuba will make you a better diver.  It will expand your horizons and your knowledge.

Make a plan.  Set some goals for the upcoming season.  Your plan should include; where you want to go, what gear you want to buy and what courses you want to take.  Also, start budgeting for these expenses.

Support your local dive shop.  It’s not just a slow time for you as a diver, but a slow time for most dive shops.  Their health is an integral part of our community.  Whenever possible, support your local dive shop.  If nothing else, stop in and visit with them.  Let them know you are still a customer and supporter.

Convince a friend or loved one to get Scuba certified.  Scuba diving is a very social sport.  Why not share it with someone you care about.  The more people you know that are divers, the more time you will spend below the surface.

Just because the regular dive season has come to an end, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be thinking about diving.  There is plenty to do during the off-season, to keep you in Master Diver shape.  Take some time every week to focus on diving and next season will be the most rewarding ever.

We, at the Academy of Scuba (http://www.academyofscuba.com) wish you a happy holiday season!

Dive safe and have fun!

It is a wonderful thing to get ready for scuba diving vacations.  Denver residents can get out of the winter cold and head out to a sunny locale for the best in scuba diving.  But before you do that, you may need to get some appropriate diving equipment.  Denver divers will find that they can shop easily online as well as at local stores for the equipment they need for their next scuba diving adventure.

The type of Denver diving gear you need will in part depend on where you plan to take your scuba diving vacations.  Denver divers that will be vacationing in areas of the world where warm water is the norm may not need any wet suit at all or may opt for a nylon wet suit or a short wet suit to provide the warmth and protection that they need.  If the plan is to vacation where the water temperatures are colder, then a full body wet suit or a dry suit might be in order for your diving equipment.  Denver swimmers will find all of these, plus accessories such as hoods, boots, vests and gloves, available at better retail diving shops.

Another important piece of Denver diving gear is your buoyancy control device, or BCD.  This unit, which also goes by the name of buoyancy compensator, keeps you at the appropriate depth in the water and is a necessary part of your divers equipment.  Colorado divers will find buoyancy control devices suitable for wear by men and women.

You will also need a breathing apparatus as part of your divers equipment.  Colorado scuba divers have options in terms of compressed air or Nitrox, and the type of cylinder that you will use.  Divers also need to use a regulator with their diving equipment.  Denver divers know that the regulator helps to control the pressure of the air in the tank so that it is breathable by you by the time it reaches you.  You will also need a snorkel so that you can conserve air in your cylinder diving equipment; Denver divers also know that they need a pony tank so that you are covered in the event of an emergency.

There are other vital pieces of divers equipment.  Colorado swimmers will also want a compass and a dive computer.  Other information gauges keep track of air pressure in your tank and your depth as you are underwater.  You will also want a mask and fins, and maybe a whistle or air horn and a flashlight that is waterproof, called a dive light.  Your local dive store can offer reliable advice about your needed divers equipment.  Colorado divers can check in with them prior to taking off on scuba diving vacations; Denver swimmers will then make sure they have all the appropriate Denver diving gear needed for their next scuba trip.

We went to the PADI website and it was a very well designed beautiful website. What this company does is offer Professional Scuba Diving Courses. These course start at the beginning level which can be taken online up to the most advanced certifications.

The cost for the PADI Online Open Water Diver Course is $120.00 and is non refundable. This fee covers training and knowledge development and gives you access to the Open Water Diver Manual which is their online course textbook. You can get all the bookwork done online. But before you get officially certified, you will need to go to your local PADI Dive Center or Resort. Once you get there, you will need to pay additional fees and complete the rest if your certification requirements in the ocean.

You will also need to bring a Diving Mask, Snorkel, a good set of Diving Fins and you're also responsible for all of your own Diving Equipment. If you are unsure of what you need to bring with you I'd recommend dropping by your local PADI Dive Center and ask them before you go out and purchase a bunch of equipment for your Dive. They may also want you to go out and get some additional equipment as well, such as a Recreational Dive Planner Table and a Log Book.

Once you register for the eLearning part of the Scuba Diving Course, they give you one year to complete that portion of it from the time you register. So I wouldn't recommend dawdling too long, plus why would you? I'm sure you're anxious to get certified anyway.

Their eLearning system consists of Videos, Audios, Graphical Illustrations and also requires some reading. This learning system also includes a bunch of short quizzes, so make sure you're picking up the material you are reading about. This program is Self Paced, so you can dictate how fast you make it through this program.

The PADI Open Water Diver Course just happens to be the most popular Scuba Diving Course in the world today. In fact, millions have started their Diving Careers by taking this course. Learning to Scuba Dive isn't easy. It takes a culimination of critical thinking concepts such as learning facts and concepts. Additionally it requires motor skills such as coordination and endurance and the application of techniques you learn in the classroom.

The The PADI Open Water Diver Course Online will give you all the knowledge you need to become successful. But the only way to develop the remaining skills necessary for you to make it as a Scuba Diver will be to visit your Local PADI Dive Center and to get live training from a Certified Scuba Instructor over there. The online portion of the course is available in Spanish, Dutch, Japanese, Italian, French and the Netherlands in addition to English.

I personally believe almost anyone can become Scuba Certified if they apply themselves a little bit. It's a great certification to bring with you if you ever want to become a Life Guard as well. And not only is Scuba Diving an excellent hobby, this is a skill that could help you in a Search & Rescue Mission or one that could help you save someones life in the future. We wish you the best of luck in your future Diving Adventures!

These days there isn't a shortage of Scuba Diving Fins available for you to decide from. The high tech fins these days are manufactured with angles and vents. These will help you swim better using advanced design architecture when compared to their old school counter parts. If you only plan on going for one dive, then you really only need one pair of fins. However if you plan on diving regularly, you should consider having multiple sets of fins handy.

A couple examples of popular fins are the Aeris Velocity Full Foot Fins. These happen to be manufactured with Power Enhancing Vents or PEV's. These vents are designed in such a way in which they do exactly what their name indicates, which is increase the fin power. What happens is water goes through the PEV's during the process of the fin stroke. This takes a majority of the stress off the divers leg while water accelerates over the blade which results in much faster velocity.

When water is run through the PEV's this results in a reduction of lateral movement from the fin which happens to just be wasted energy anyway. This inevitably results in each kick becoming much more efficient. The Aeris Velocity Full Foot Fins happen to be rated as some of the most popular Scuba Diving Fins on the market by Rodales. This fin happens to be a great fin for the legs, is very easy to maneuver and allows for propulsion without exerting any extra effort.

Other popular Scuba Diving Fins are the U.S. Divers Proflex II. One customer from Amazon mentioned they purchased a set of these fins and that there were no rubbing or blisters on their dive. These fins you can actually purchase at a relatively low cost of around $25.00. They got a 5 star rating 20 out of 29 reviews.

Also the U.S. Divers Proflex II Diving Fins give you almost as much boost as fins that cost $200.00 or more. It was also suggested by a custom that you purchase these fins one size larger than normal and by doing so you will avoid the "rubber biting" effect that can happen when you purchase fins that are a bit small for your feet.

Which Scuba Diving Fins you purchase depend mostly on how frequently you'll be diving and whether you'll be Scuba Diving or Snorkeling. Snorklers only swim in shallow water so the fins they need don't have to work as efficiently as they would for a Scuba Diver. Also remember to wash your fins off with a fresh water hose each time you use them. This will prevent salt water dry rotting from ruining the material, seams or connecting parts as salt water has been known to destroy just about anything.

Let Brian Garvin and Jeff West teach you more about Scuba Fins and Scuba Diving Fins on our website today.

Triggerfish Appearance

The triggerfish can become quite a large fish, sometimes up to 3 feet in length.  They travel in groups, and are characterised by their green scales covered in spots or stripes.  They are an attractive fish, usually very popular with snorkelers and scuba divers.  They have a fairly flat body and two dorsal spines which they can lock, giving them their name “trigger” fish.  They use this ability as a defense mechanism against their predators.

Triggerfish Activity and Behaviour

The triggerfish is a generally solitary fish, swimming around the reef feeding on small invertebrates that live around the coral reef.  During their breeding season, the triggerfish hides their eggs in a hole and can become quite aggressive in order to protect their eggs.  Their have been cases of a triggerfish attacking scuba divers and snorkelers and because some of them have big teeth, these attacks can draw blood, although are unlikely to result in any serious injury.

Triggerfish Species

There are several different kinds of triggerfish, all of which are different in appearance, whether it be size, colors or actual design.  Species present in the Maldives include the Titan Triggerfish, the Clown Triggerfish and the Picasso Triggerfish.  The Picasso Triggerfish is probably the most spectacular of the varieties, thanks to his stunning black, white and yellow markings.

Where to find Triggerfish in the Maldives

While Triggerfish are very commonly spotted in the Maldives, there are several dive sites where encounters are more common than others.  These include:  The Fihalhohi Reef, Meeru Island and Ari Atoll.

Hundreds of thousands of people get certified to Scuba dive every year.  Some of them are doing it for a one-time thrill on their honeymoon.  Others are getting certified as a first step, in many, to a (underwater) world of adventure.  In either case, taking a beginner lesson and getting your Open Water Scuba Diver or Scuba Diver certification is the first step.

All beginner classes are  structured in a similar fashion.  The class has two parts, knowledge development and in-water work.  Regardless of the agency (whether PADI, NAUI, SSI or SDI), there is little variance in this first step.  The most important factor is choosing an instructor in which you feel comfortable.  To get certified as a beginner Scuba diver, you must complete all the knowledge development and pass a final exam and you must "master" your in-water skills. While this may seem daunting, it is generally pretty easy for most people.  And, it can be done in as little as a long weekend.

Your Beginner Scuba Diver Course

Most Scuba shops offer mid-week and weekend courses.  Beginner classes are broken up into three components. The first component is the knowledge development.  This is done using three different strategies (1) self study, (2) classroom lecture and (3) online learning.  Most instructors employ more than one of these strategies to develop a student's knowledge base.

The second component is confined water sessions. Generally, there are five parts to a confined water session.  However, more than one part can be done in a single day or evening.  Confined water sessions are done at a pace determined by the student's performance.  Some students excel in confined water, some take more time.  Confined water sessions can be done in shallow lakes or oceans, but, most commonly, confined water sessions are done in ten foot deep, heated pools to maximize comfort and relaxation during the early stages of skill development.

The third component is open water sessions.  These are a minimum of four dives done in a lake or ocean environment.  No more than three training dives are done in one day.  During the training dives, students will show mastery of the skills learned during the confined water sessions.  Divers can reach up to 60 feet (which is the maximum depth for an Open Water Diver), discover marine life and live the adventure that is a Scuba diver!

Learn to Scuba dive online

It is the 21st century and the world has taken to educating itself online.  Scuba is no different.  As mentioned above in the first component of a Scuba class, self study is an integral part of learning to dive.  Traditionally, self study has been accomplished through manuals and text books.  And, while many folks, still enjoy this method, the trend has brought us to embracing online learning for the self study component.  As of this date, in-water sessions cannot be done online ... yet.

The Online Learning program needs an Internet connection.  It can be done 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.  You do it at your pace.  Some divers do it all in one session, some divers break it up into several sessions.

Your first class session

O.K., you have finished your self study, and tonight is the first night of class.  What should you do? Relax, it's going to be a lot of fun.  First off, you should bring all your forms.  Your instructor would have given these to you when you signed up. Additionally, you should have all of your self study complete.  If you are using the online learning service, print off your completion document.  If you are using a textbook, bring copies of your completed knowledge reviews.  Eat something light before class --- no carbs.  If you are in the classroom, bring a notebook, paper and some water (in a non-spill bottle).  There will be breaks.  If you are in the pool, you will need to bring your personal gear.  This includes, your mask, snorkel, fins, booties, bathing suit, towel, and dry clothes to change into.  You may want to bring some ear drying formula for after the pool session.  Within a few hours, you will be looking and acting like a new Scuba diver.

Gear for a new Scuba diver

Scuba diving is a gear intensive sport.  From the first day of inquiring about Scuba, you have probably been discussing and researching gear.  As a new diver, in class, you must own a mask, snorkel, fins with boots, and an underwater timing device.  Your gear must be Scuba quality.  If you don't know what that means, you should talk with your instructor.  However, as a general rule, if it came in a $20 package at the local pool store, it probably isn't Scuba quality.  Once you have jumped in the pool once or twice, it is definitely beneficial to talk about purchasing the rest of your gear with your instructor.  Owning Scuba equipment increases your comfort, fun and safety.  Additionally, once you own your gear, Scuba diving is far more economically sensible than most other adventure oriented sports.  Of course, like any equipment purchase, you want to buy right and buy once.  If you can't afford or are unsure of purchasing additional equipment, renting is a viable and acceptable second option.

Once you complete your classroom, confined water and open water sessions, you will be certified to go Scuba diving with a buddy.  This is where the fun and adventure start.  However, this is not where the learning stops.  A great diver is always learning.  Advanced classes will increase your fun and safety.  Sign up for your Scuba certification class today. Your adventure of a lifetime is waiting for you.

Have fun and dive safe!
