One thing we can all agree on is that the Scuba Gear Regulator is a necessity before going Scuba Diving. But how would one know which regulator would be their best purchasing option. The first question to ask yourself are what are your dive pattners. Or are you just a beginner starting about to go on your first diving adventure?

The process of choosing the proper Scuba Gear Regulator could be rather tough if you haven't purchase one before. All of the regulators manufactured these days are quality control regulated and are guaranteed to meet specific standards. So no matter which one you plan on getting it's very doubtful you'll be disappointed. One of the main suggestions is to purchase one of the major name brands.

Many have tried and tested these Scuba Gear Regulators before you have. Also certain brands when purchased offer a life-time of free servicing that go along with it. This isn't necessarily the case with all products, but when purchasing a regulator it's important to note that this is one of the products that you will get more out of it the more you spend. The reason is the materials will be made of a much higher quality and will be more durable and are made to withstand the irregularities of the ocean waters.

The purchasing costs for a Scuba Gear Regulator will vary, but if you are diligent you can find a very nice one online for under $100.00 these days. These should end up performing just as good as a brand new one you purchased in a Scuba Diving Retail Shop. The only difference is that if you are new to Scuba Diving, you should get it checked out by a qualified Scuba Gear Inspector before you go on your first dive.

You'll want to make sure that the various parts of your regulator are functioning properly and that none of the parts are missing as well as none of the hoses being torn. Also don't forget to purchase an Octupus as well. An Octupus is your 2nd regulator and should only be used in emergencies.

You will give this to our Diving Partner if they run out of air as a backup air source. Also make sure your Octupus is from the same manufacturer as the one you purchased your original regulator from to ensure compatability.

You don't have to necessarily purchase your gauges from the same manufacturer. However that being said I would still recommend going with a major manufacturer. This way you won't have to worry about the accuracy of these Scuba Gauges like you would if you purchased an imitation. For example Uwatec or Suunto are two great ones to go with.

Also I wanted to mention that when you go on your next Scuba Diving Adventure, don't be too concerned about Sharks or getting swallowed by one. At least not according to statistics. One one person died of a Shark Attack in the year 2007. And in 2008 there were only 4 people. The media likes to really scare people about these, so much so it makes people afraid to go swimming in the Ocean. The chances of you getting struck by lightning are about 15x larger.

Scuba diving is a wonderful sport and with the right equipment it can prove to be one of the most fulfilling experiences. Here is what you need to know about your scuba equipment.

What gear will you need when diving?

When you first start out there are five items you will need for basic scuba diving and training.

Scuba Mask: Perhaps this is the most important of them all. This is the mask that will let you see the wonders of the under water world. When buying a scuba mask it is very important to try a wide variety on. Try different makes, different shapes and sizes, not every mask will fit every person so it's important to find the one that will fit you best as the mask also provides a seal against water entering your eyes.

Scuba Booties: These boot like shoes will be your best friend when walking along rough surfaces or slippery rocks. These boots are designed to protect the feet from rough surfaces. They have a non-slip grip on the bottom to assist with walking on slippery surfaces such as rocks.

Swim Fins: These shoes allow you to experience the water as other water creatures do. Fins allow you to propel yourself through the water in fluid movements with less effort. Scuba equipment can be heavy and awkward at times so having the fins allows you to move easier and more efficiently in that water. There are a variety of swim fins to choose from. There are fins that are webbed like a ducks' feet, there are fins that are shaped more like the fin of a dolphin. Make sure to try on a variety of fins to choose one that fits well and will suit your needs.

Scuba weights and belt: This is essential as the weights and belt are what allows you to stay underwater. These come in a variety of makes so trying a few out to get the one that feels best for you would be idea.

Snorkel: This will allow you to enjoy the view from the surface of the water without using your regulator. Using the snorkel while on the surface either before or after a dive will help to conserve the air in the tank and also as a safety mechanism. The rule of thumb is to always have one of the two in your mouth at all times. Either the snorkel or the regulator will help should be caught up in a wave. Either of these devices will allow you to breath.

Always remember when looking to buy your very first scuba equipment, this is one sport that buying second hand is not a good idea and can actually pose to be dangerous. Scuba diving is not cheap but the reward you will get on your first dive will make it worth every penny. The key to a successful dive is successful equipment. Shop at reputable stores where the owner or employees have a strong knowledge in scuba diving. Bring along a friend who may be a seasoned scuba diver or an instructor who may be willing to assist you in your shopping endeavour.
Never buy scuba equipment online as most of the equipment requires you to try ti on. It is essential that you feel completely comfortable in your gear as you will be descending many feet underwater and that is not the time to be uncomfortable.

Remember as you shop for your scuba equipment to be cautious and know what you need before you go. Having a clear understanding of the sport and what is needed will ensure that you have the best experience possible.

Scuba diving equipment has evolved to become sophisticated, incredibly safe, reliable and high performance. There’s a massive range of options and features available, to allow scuba diving in any environment.

To familiarize you with how a set of scuba diving gear works, we’ll run you through a basic set, and discuss what options and features would be suitable for warm water Koh Tao diving.

How Does Scuba Gear Work: A Typical Koh Tao Diving Setup

Scuba Cylinder

Firstly we need somewhere to store the air which we’ll be breathing whilst underwater. Scuba cylinders or tanks) come in a range of sizes and materials. Scuba diving Koh Tao we opt for aluminum cylinders, which are resistant to the corrosive salty ocean conditions, compressing air into 12 litre cylinders at two hundred time normal atmospheric pressure (200 bar). That volume of air allows an average diver to dive for about 45 minutes at normal recreational depths, (factoring in a safety margin).

Regulator – First Stage

This is the bit which attaches to the valve of the scuba cylinder. Since the air inside the cylinder is at two hundred times normal pressure, we need to reduce that pressure down to make it breathable. This is the job of the regulator first stage. Most first stages reduce down the pressure to about ten bar above ambient water pressure (called the intermediate pressure), which is then fed down to the ….

Regulator - Second Stage

This is the bit that you put in your mouth and breathe from. The second stage contains a large diaphragm which the surrounding water pressure pushes on. What that does is adjust the intermediate pressure (delivered from the first stage) to exactly the same pressure as the surrounding water. The result is that when you breathe in, a valve opens and allows air to flow freely. When you stop breathing in or exhale, the valve remains closed allowing you to conserve your air supply.

Regulator - Alternate Air Source

In case your buddy has an equipment problem, you also have a alternate second stage attached to your first stage, which means in the event of an emergency your buddy can also breathe from your cylinder. This is one of the reasons why it’s always a good idea to stick with a buddy when scuba diving.

Buoyancy Control Device - BCD

Obviously we need a way of keeping the cumbersome cylinder attached to us, so the BCD is a robust jacket which allows you to strap the cylinder to your back. The BCD also has a second important function. You can adjust the amount of air inside the jacket so that you hover motionlessly in mid water and control your position underwater. Whilst at the surface you can inflate the BCD to avoid swimming to stay afloat, and save energy.

Wetsuit

Your body looses heat about twenty times faster in water than air, so you’ll need to wear some kind of exposure protection to keep warm. The good news is, Koh Tao diving has very warm water – usually about 30C. That means during the Padi open water course we usually wear a 2.5mm neoprene ‘shorty’ wetsuit , which keeps us comfortable during the dives.

Weights

The bad news is that neoprene is buoyant (as is body fat),  so to be able to descend underwater we have to carry some lead weights. The easiest way to do this (adopted by most Koh Tao dive schools) is to attach the lead to a weight belt which you secure around your waist prior to each dive.

Scuba Diving Mask

Your eyes can’t focus in water, so you need to wear a mask to be able to see when diving. If you have a little spare cash and plan to invest in piece of scuba diving gear of your own, make sure you buy a mask. A good diving mask makes all the difference to your Koh Tao diving experience – if you can see properly you’ll have a much better time!

Diving Fins

With all this gear, it becomes a bit tricky getting around underwater. To make life easier we wear large, rigid diving fins which take all the effort out of swimming, allowing us to maintain our air supply and explore the Koh Tao dive sites with ease.

When you have a good amount of money invested in scuba diving equipment, it’s only logical to maintain it properly to last you many years. Not to mention your safety and well being are dependent on the same scuba gear used in every dive you make.

Are You Neglecting Your Scuba Diving Gear

Nothing shortens the life of your scuba equipment more than salt water, where the majority of scuba diving is done. If not properly rinsed off after a dive salt crystals (that are extremely abrasive) will be left on your gear, and will begin to destroy it.

After a dive, be sure to rinse (with fresh water) all your basic equipment like your mask, fins, boots and snorkel.

The buoyancy compensator (BC) must be rinsed inside and out. After completely rinsing off the outside of BC the bladder must washed out. This is very important and probably the most overlooked step in the preventive maintenance of your scuba gear. First drain out any salt water trapped in bladder. Then put some fresh water in bladder and shake vigorously letting water run out of mouthpiece. Repeat this process 2 or 3 times. Be sure all water is out of bladder.

If you use a wetsuit it’s very important to rinse this in side and out. Turn the suit inside out to insure getting all salt off. The regulator must be rinsed and purge air thru to get any water out.

Make sure your scuba diving gear is completely dry before storing in a cool dry place. Don’t dry your scuba equipment in direct sunlight; the rays also shorten the life of scuba gear. Keep your mask in a protective plastic box so the lens doesn’t get scratched. Store your buoyancy compensator on a sturdy hanger and fins in flattened state.

Make It a Habit

Once you have made this routine a habit, you will see how quickly and easy preventive maintenance on scuba gear really is. Save yourself money and aggravation when on vacation trying to relax and enjoy.

Many of us suffer from nearsightedness (trouble seeing things at a distance) or farsightedness (trouble seeing things up close). In everyday life people deal with these problems by wearing some kind of corrective lenses like glasses or contacts. Another way that is becoming increasingly popular is laser surgery on the eye that restores good vision without any future dependency on corrective lenses. This procedure can cost many thousands of dollars and most insurance companies don’t cover this type of surgery.

Seeing underwater is a different story. Contact lenses can be worn when scuba diving because the mask provides an air pocket between your eyes and the water. The most common and economical contacts are disposable soft lenses. Let’s face it, the time you have underwater is precious and limited. Don’t be inconvenienced and waste valuable time fixing problems with a scuba mask on your next scuba dive or snorkeling experience. It can also be embarrassing if you hold up the entire diving group or miss the dive altogether because of faulty scuba gear.

There’s a lot more to consider when investing in a scuba diving mask than you might think. Everyone has a unique face and head shape. It’s important that the mask conform to your face and create a water tight seal. A mask that doesn’t seal properly can be very frustrating and limit the enjoyment on your trip.

Here is a good way to test for a suitable fit. Take the mask and put it on your face (the way it will be when diving) without the strap used to hold it. Inhale slowly and the mask should stay put. If inhaling harder is required or the mask falls off, most likely this isn’t a good fit. The goal is to restrict the amount of water seeping into the scuba mask to as little as possible.

Comfort is also important when it comes to scuba gear. Be sure the silicone strap fits nicely around your head and doesn’t pull your hair. Adjustments of the strap can be made on both sides of the mask to achieve the best comfort while diving.

Another option to consider is the type of lenses in the mask. Two basic choices are the side-view lenses or the flat regular type. Side-view lenses can improve your field of vision.  If you wear glasses a good idea is getting a mask with optical lenses prescribed to your needs.

Try to prevent a difficult and possibly dangerous situation before it happens. When purchasing scuba equipment or snorkeling gear, do your homework and get what is necessary to meet your recreational requirements.

Cool mornings, cloudy days and big crowds marked the Scuba Show weekend in Long Beach (www.scubashow.com). I can’t think of too many ways I would rather spend a weekend than looking at all the cool new products and talking Scuba diving. OK, perhaps I would rather be Scuba diving. But, this was a good second.

A lot of folks used the weekend to spend one day in the water in Catalina or Laguna and then one day at the show. A great combination! For the most part, there were a lot of happy divers enjoying what they love the most - Scuba.

There were many ‘highlights’ to the 76,000 square foot Exhibit. The over 200 vendors were very positive and uplifting. Occasionally, you could hear some whispered conversations about the state of the industry or the economy, however most folks felt that things were improving.

Of course, while it is always a pleasure to see old friends and visit the booths , the real excitement of the show is going from booth to booth and seeing all the new Scuba gear and hearing about all the exotic destinations that want you to come visit them. We had a lot of folks from the Academy of Scuba, in Phoenix AZ, at the show (customers and staff). And, after two days of browsing through every booth in the convention hall, I could write about each and every one of them, I wanted to take a second and write about the more interesting conversations and unique products we had and visited.

One of our first visits on Saturday morning was to the Divers’ Platform Booth. Harry Wood, president of the Divers’ Platform, was smiling and larger than life. He had all his platforms out on display with an impressive stand that truly demonstrated the capabilities of this amazing product. The Divers’ Platform is more than a buoy or dive-flag. The Divers’ Platform is a surface workhorse for the diver or the dive professional. And, Harry keeps innovating more and more utility including his bailout bottle and 30 foot hose. For those of us who like good old American ingenuity and construction, the Divers’ Platform is a great tool. I own two of them. http://www.thediversplatform.com

We spent a lot of time at the Bonica Precision Booth (http://www.bonicadive.com). I have been using the Bonica HD camera for over a year. Nice unit, low cost makes it a eye catcher, in my book. The had their light rigs on display and spent a lot of time talking about how instructors are using it in their Underwater Videography Course. It was worth the stop and the great discussion. They even handed me a nice CD filled with files specific to instructors.

As always, it was great to see our friends at Atomic Aquatics (http://www.atomicaquatics.com) and talk leading edge regulators. They had their ST-1 on display and we got a good look at that. And, we spoke quite a lot about their fins and the great success they having with them. Nothing earth shattering, but always a good experience and learn something new.

Bonaire was well represented at the show, with the Bonaire Tourism Association, Captain Don’s, Buddy Dive, the Divi and more. (http://www.ilovebonaire.com) If you are looking to go to Bonaire, it seems like there are a lot of great deals between now and October 1. I spent a fair amount of time speaking with the folks from Captain Don’s (Bonaire and Curacao). Captain Don’s has an Inter-Island special on a two week stay, on both Islands, they pick up the inter-island air fare. Further, they said there are programs where the government is offering airline incentives. Of course, you would want to contact Captain Don’s directly about these programs. I am sure there are conditions and expiration dates.

It was obvious that the airline baggage restrictions were creating entrepreneurial opportunities. One company, Dive Caddy (http://www.divecaddy.com) has come up with a unique solution to this problem. The Dive Caddy allows divers to put all of their gear in a simple roll-up bag that can be used as a carry-on item. There is a video demo on their site.

One of my favorite stops at every dive show is by the DeepSeaSupply (http://www.deepseasupply.com) Booth. Tobin, the company’s president, always has a good little give-away. This year was no different. His innovative product of the show was his Power Inflator Service Tool. I took some time and went through all his gear offerings. And, as usual, the innovation and high quality continues to be signature mark for DeepSeaSupply.

There must have been four or five rebreather manufacturers represented at the show. And, the folks at Extreme Scuba, were touting their specialization in the field. All the rebreather booths seemed to have a gravitational pull to them. Not sure if it was just curiosity or if their truly is this much interest in rebreathers. My guess is we are a lot closer to mainstream adoption than most folks think. The one rebreather manufacturer that caught my attention was the Nautilus (http://www.divenautilus.com). They are fairly new to the block and I don’t think they have set their retail price. I do think, however, they will be priced below the competition and they have a quality that is second to none in this field. In speaking the with the founders, their unit is comprised of the highest quality manufacturing process and design. Their use of fiberoptics is impressive and their container design is truly unique. I am looking forward to learning more about the Nautilus.

The Roddenberry Dive Team was on site with “celebrity divers” and merchandise. Their booth was pretty active. I did get a glimpse at their Dry Suits. The ones that look like Star Trek uniforms and noticed they have a membership. Anyone interested in an “away mission” specialty should check out http://www.roddenberrydiveteam.com

Speaking of celebrities, the folks at DiverWire (http://www.diverwire.com) had record setting Breath Hold Diver Jana Strain at their booth. Jana is a very impressive Free Diver. Smart, articulate and judging by the line of guys there … attractive. Jana was autographing photos of her Free Diving. Looking at her early successes, I would guess that Jana has a bright future ahead of her.

It’s been a while since last diving the incredible walls of St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands. We spent a little time reminiscing at the Cane Bay Dive Shop (http://www.canebayscuba.com). Cane Bay Dive sits across the street from a beautiful beach. From there you can catch one of their boats or shore dive what seems like an endless wall. Within minutes, you are scurried off to incredible dive sites like North Star or Two Palms. The Reef’s crest is a comfortable 35 feet and the wall continues into the deep abuss at depths where advanced Trimix divers dare not too follow. After the dive, there is a great little restaurant and bar within a stone’s throw of the rinse tanks. St. Croix is great diving and Cane Bay are great folks.

Every once in a while you would see a buzz of people hanging out by the Blue Steel booth (http://www.bluesteelllc.com). They had their high quality steel tanks out on display. They also had a fair amount of valves and manifolds with them. Glad I wasn’t the one helping them carry everything into the convention center. As we spoke with their staff, we wildly impressed to see at the innovation and creativity they are coming up with to customize solutions for all types of divers.

With all the equipment, travel, art and other vendors on display, we could spend hours telling you about every booth we visited. There we over 30 seminars and presentations. Experts like Marty Snyderman, Dale Sheckler and Bruce Watkins were on hand to help divers become better. A great time in a fun little Southern California town.

My advice is take some time next year and spend it with a bunch of divers in Long Beach, CA.

That price actually is reasonable for what you're getting assuming everything is in good condition. That particular BC is actually one of the best that Mares came out with then. I still have mine for use as a back up but if I were to sell it, I'd be demanding 200 bucks minimum as that's what they're worth. There's almost 25% of of your cost right there. You're getting fair value for your dollar. No super deal but less than what the items would normally go for separately used. If you need all of it and you're sure that the regs have been properly serviced and all else is in good order I'd grab it if I were you unless you plan on buying from several sources which may take some time to aquire what you want at a price fair to you.

If you are looking for some recreation, then scuba diving is an amazing idea. You should know that scuba diving is a chance enjoy some fascinating experiences in a new world located underwater. Scuba diving, when done safely, can be a great hobby for entertainment and fun.

To truly enjoy the entertaining moments while scuba diving you won't necessarily have to spend a lot of money. It is not easy for everyone to purchase top of the line scuba diving gear, because some brands can be extremely costly. The garden hose didn't work because of water pressure. Your lungs aren't strong enough to overcome that amount of pressure.

Try this. Do all the prep you can on the surface. If you have some wooden dowels just a bit smaller than the screws, put them through the holes in the cover plate, and use them to line up the plate on the first dive. Come up, catch your breath, and use the 2nd dive to install one screw. Keep going if you have to, until that screw is in place, BUT NOT TIGHT. Then rest, and do the other side, and tighten it. Then tighten the first one. The reason you don't tighten the first one is that if you alignment isn't perfect, you may not get the 2nd screw in.

Of if you have a dive shop in your area, call them up and ask if they know someone who can come out and do the job for you for $10 or $20. If you're in the northern hemisphere, the season is probably just beginning, and we're all itching for a chance to get back into the water - even if it's just a pool. It will cost you a few dollars, but that's a lot cheaper and easier than draining the pool.
