Recreating E.T underwater was a long time dream of mine. On a hot, sunny Caribbean summer day back on August 2003 I've assembled with a few good friends and co-workers at Utila Dive Centre, Bay Islands, Honduras to give it a go.
Our goal was to recreate the famous E.T bicycle scene, riding a bicycle towards the surface. Sound easy isn’t it? Well, here's the story behind the making of Underwater E.T.
Dive Location
We've started by planning our dive. We wanted to find an area shallow enough to be safe and be able to dive as long as we can until we get everything right, yet deep enough to be able to ascend towards the surface for a long time, and to avoid water movement as little as possible. Bottom had to be sandy to avoid any disturbances and damage to the environment. We've figured loosing track of our ascent rate would be a very possible scenario, adding the fact we had to share air source between "Eliot" and E.T, we've asked a fellow Dive Instructor to be present and act as a handyman and a safety diver.
Setting the Costumes for the Dock Scene
We wanted to film one dock scene where E.T is taken away by Elliot and an F.B.I agent, just before Elliot and E.T make the run for it. We used a few Scuba Masks worn on different positions around E.T's head to shape E.T's head and make it look a bit more alien like.
Experiencing Buoyancy Problems Underwater
Once we've figured out where to dive, and the logistics around it, we started setting up our bicycle and customs: Bicycles had to be flat tired as air would lift them upside-down. We places a little weight on the rear tire to tilt the bike upwards, I was inhaling as long as I could to gain some positive buoyancy while "Elliot" inflated his BCD, and held the heavy bicycle. We also struggled hard with stabilizing the bicycle and elevating at the same time
Setting the Costumes Underwater
E.T (I) was wearing an old white blanket that had to be clipped to the wet suit and bicycle. As I couldn’t fit to the bicycles basket I had to share air with "Elliot" (Neil) that made it a bit awkward and harder to ascend to the surface head up.
A few tries made us realize we needed to allow air to vent out through our customs as E.T's blanket and Elliot's cape kept floating up. We had o clip the blanket and cape around the head so the Regulators second stages will be left out and air will bubble out without accumulating under the costumes and elevate them.
After about 35 minutes, and suffering foot and legs cramps from sitting on the bike for so long we finally managed to pull it off.
Followed by a Safety Diver and Dan our videographer we took of into the sun making a long time dream come true.
Years later, 2007, a group of us recreated the scene again, adding more scenes to the plot.
The Movie wouldn’t have been made without the generous help of Utila Dive Centers owners and stuff.

Scuba diving equipment has evolved to become sophisticated, incredibly safe, reliable and high performance. There’s a massive range of options and features available, to allow scuba diving in any environment.
To familiarize you with how a set of scuba diving gear works, we’ll run you through a basic set, and discuss what options and features would be suitable for warm water Koh Tao diving.

How Does Scuba Gear Work: A Typical Koh Tao Diving Setup
Scuba Cylinder
Firstly we need somewhere to store the air which we’ll be breathing whilst underwater. Scuba cylinders or tanks) come in a range of sizes and materials. Scuba diving Koh Tao we opt for aluminum cylinders, which are resistant to the corrosive salty ocean conditions, compressing air into 12 litre cylinders at two hundred time normal atmospheric pressure (200 bar). That volume of air allows an average diver to dive for about 45 minutes at normal recreational depths, (factoring in a safety margin).
Regulator – First Stage
This is the bit which attaches to the valve of the scuba cylinder. Since the air inside the cylinder is at two hundred times normal pressure, we need to reduce that pressure down to make it breathable. This is the job of the regulator first stage. Most first stages reduce down the pressure to about ten bar above ambient water pressure (called the intermediate pressure), which is then fed down to the ….
Regulator - Second Stage
This is the bit that you put in your mouth and breathe from. The second stage contains a large diaphragm which the surrounding water pressure pushes on. What that does is adjust the intermediate pressure (delivered from the first stage) to exactly the same pressure as the surrounding water. The result is that when you breathe in, a valve opens and allows air to flow freely. When you stop breathing in or exhale, the valve remains closed allowing you to conserve your air supply.
Regulator - Alternate Air Source
In case your buddy has an equipment problem, you also have a alternate second stage attached to your first stage, which means in the event of an emergency your buddy can also breathe from your cylinder. This is one of the reasons why it’s always a good idea to stick with a buddy when scuba diving.
Buoyancy Control Device - BCD
Obviously we need a way of keeping the cumbersome cylinder attached to us, so the BCD is a robust jacket which allows you to strap the cylinder to your back. The BCD also has a second important function. You can adjust the amount of air inside the jacket so that you hover motionlessly in mid water and control your position underwater. Whilst at the surface you can inflate the BCD to avoid swimming to stay afloat, and save energy.
Wetsuit
Your body looses heat about twenty times faster in water than air, so you’ll need to wear some kind of exposure protection to keep warm. The good news is, Koh Tao diving has very warm water – usually about 30C. That means during the Padi open water course we usually wear a 2.5mm neoprene ‘shorty’ wetsuit , which keeps us comfortable during the dives.
Weights
The bad news is that neoprene is buoyant (as is body fat), so to be able to descend underwater we have to carry some lead weights. The easiest way to do this (adopted by most Koh Tao dive schools) is to attach the lead to a weight belt which you secure around your waist prior to each dive.
Scuba Diving Mask
Your eyes can’t focus in water, so you need to wear a mask to be able to see when diving. If you have a little spare cash and plan to invest in piece of scuba diving gear of your own, make sure you buy a mask. A good diving mask makes all the difference to your Koh Tao diving experience – if you can see properly you’ll have a much better time!
Diving Fins
With all this gear, it becomes a bit tricky getting around underwater. To make life easier we wear large, rigid diving fins which take all the effort out of swimming, allowing us to maintain our air supply and explore the Koh Tao dive sites with ease.

“It can be quite a scary thought (when you are sitting beneath a Delayed Surface Marker Buoy decompressing) wondering if the boat has seen you, or if you are adrift on your lonesome”, stated Alex Vassallo, Custom Divers CEO. “On a long deco your imagination can play horrible games with you. I tend to keep mine occupied by thinking of things that will make diving safer, and this was where the Custom Divers Seeker radar detectable D-SMB was conceived. I wanted to be assured that the boat had seen my D-SMB, so the solution was to make it radar detectable. Basically, the Seeker is a traditional D-SMB which contains a conductive material shaped to receive and send back radar signals. It sounds simple but the Seeker took over three years of research, development and testing until we were truly satisfied we had a full patent pending product that will revolutionise diver safety.
During the development phase it was tested every time I went diving, and over a number of months we were getting good results but I felt it was not enough. I wanted to improve the detectable distance of the Seeker. With further modifications to the design and materials the Seeker was then re-tested by various Skippers on the English South Coast to verify its performance on their radar, and thanks guys for all your support. After several evolvements one Skipper phoned to say “this model is brilliant”! and so we felt it was appropriate to run broader and more extensive tests and at this stage we involved the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboats Institution) and Her Majesty’s Coastguard. I am delighted to confirm that the Seeker D-SMB showed up on boat radars from 1.5 miles away and from 2 miles on helicopters. The tests were conducted in British seas, over a long period of time in various conditions and included a simulated pitch black/fog search. The Skipper would navigate purely using the radar (with a watcher looking out of the windscreen to check he didn’t run into anything) and on each occasion the boats/helicopters located the buoy with ease, ending up within a few feet from the Seeker. From the Skipper/Rescue Services point of view the great thing about the Seeker radar detectable D-SMB is that because it is fully compatible with every radar system there is no need for any additional kit.
For the diver, a key feature of the Seeker is that it has a four-way fill option. Having seen many a diver forget to fill their D-SMB crack bottle I wanted to come up with a number of filling solutions. Firstly, it can be easily orally inflated, by blowing into a tube. Alternatively we have fitted a non-locking nipple fitting to the oral tube that connects to a low pressure inflator hose. Then there is the system that a number of divers already use, which is cracking a small air cylinder to fill the D-SMB. (The diver needs to replace the Seeker’s blanking plug with a DIN or A Clamp Pillar Adaptor before an AP Valves 0.1 litre, 232 bar bottle is attached). Finally, the diver can fill the Seeker D-SMB in the traditional manner by purging a second stage into the bottom of the buoy.
“So now just knowing that the Skipper can see my blob has given me great peace of mind on long hangs”, stated Vassallo, “and it’s great knowing we’ve helped divers improve their safety”. If you want to be safe in the knowledge your Skipper can easily see your Delayed Surface Marker Buoy, log onto www.customdivers.com for more information and technical specifications on the Seeker radar detectable Delayed Surface Marker Buoy.

Second Stage Regulator
What will happen if you don't keep exhaling if u lose ur second stage regulator?
I am gonna learn to scuba dive at Mermet Springs (Southern Illinois) this July and i was reading my OPEN WATER DIVER workbook and I saw that you shouldn't hold ur breath and I was just wondering why? will ur lungs explode or sumthing?
As you will learn in your SCUBA class, if you ascend while holding your breath you could suffer a lung over expansion injury which can be fatal. Your lungs don't 'explode', but air is forced into your tissues and blood stream which can cause an embolis that can cause a heart attack or stroke. That is why you are taught to aways exhale when the regulator is out of your mouth. You will also about how, due to the equal pressure of air in lungs at a given depth that you can indeed exhale all the way to the surface and still have plenty of air in your lungs. This is known as an emmergency swimming ascent.

Stimulation, excitement and arousal are three commonly used and similar terms to describe the intensity of love act. Some people prefer to extend the arousal phase while some people find the end of the resolution more satisfying than the tension of plateau phase. For many women, physical and emotional satisfaction does not seem to be closely linked with orgasm. Sexual union can be deeply satisfying even if orgasm does not occur. They enjoy pleasure from the warmth, the trust and sharing. Moreover many couples have different temperaments and different levels of knowledge about sex.
An ideal and complete lovemaking comprises the following steps – prelude, love play, sexual union and the after play. In this article we will briefly discuss about the two important stages of the lovemaking – prelude and love play.
The prelude is the beginning stage of the love act. The first sign of arousal in man is usually the erection of his male organ because more blood flows into his penis. His testicles swell and draw up closer to his body. His male organ becomes hard and erect. His nipples may become erect and more sensitive. His body feels alive to touch, beat faster and shallower.
When woman get aroused, more blood flows into her vulva and clitoris. Her genital area swells and feels full her clitoris becomes hard and erect and comes out from under its hood. She starts to produce more vaginal fluid and her labia begin to feel quite wet. Her nipples may become erect and more sensitive. Her body feels alive to touch, her muscles start to tense up and contract her heart starts to eat faster and her breathing becomes faster and shallower.
In some cases these changes take place slowly, in other rapidly and in exceptional case with the speed and certainly of lightning. The prelude ends as the love plays begins. There is no defined time when one can say it's the end of the prelude phase and initiating the second stage. It is obvious that they merge into each other in delicate gradation. But it is not difficult to recognize.
This particular stage is of special importance as it is necessary in order to stimulate her fully and makes her ready for coital purpose. Love plays give abundance of pleasures to both the couples. The activities ranging from teasing, caresses and kiss and other form of physical contact that lead more or less directly to sexual gratification are parts of love play.
