Let’s face it, the time you have underwater is precious and limited. Don’t be inconvenienced and waste valuable time fixing problems with a scuba mask on your next scuba dive or snorkeling experience. It can also be embarrassing if you hold up the entire diving group or miss the dive altogether because of faulty scuba gear.

There’s a lot more to consider when investing in a scuba diving mask than you might think. Everyone has a unique face and head shape. It’s important that the mask conform to your face and create a water tight seal. A mask that doesn’t seal properly can be very frustrating and limit the enjoyment on your trip.

Here is a good way to test for a suitable fit. Take the mask and put it on your face (the way it will be when diving) without the strap used to hold it. Inhale slowly and the mask should stay put. If inhaling harder is required or the mask falls off, most likely this isn’t a good fit. The goal is to restrict the amount of water seeping into the scuba mask to as little as possible.

Comfort is also important when it comes to scuba gear. Be sure the silicone strap fits nicely around your head and doesn’t pull your hair. Adjustments of the strap can be made on both sides of the mask to achieve the best comfort while diving.

Another option to consider is the type of lenses in the mask. Two basic choices are the side-view lenses or the flat regular type. Side-view lenses can improve your field of vision.  If you wear glasses a good idea is getting a mask with optical lenses prescribed to your needs.

Try to prevent a difficult and possibly dangerous situation before it happens. When purchasing scuba equipment or snorkeling gear, do your homework and get what is necessary to meet your recreational requirements.

How Important is a Scuba Diving or Snorkeling Mask

well when iwas taking my course i had to buy my own mask snorkel boots fins becasue this a necessitiy when your diving and you should always buy your own regulator and B.C. becasue these things not all dive sites have them to rent and you wouldnt want to share all that equipment that other people have used i have everything except my dive tank which you dont have to buy beavuse you can rent that anywhere but ive sometimes left some of my equiment at home and find it to very fruasting that i have to rent all this equpiment its really qutie annoying not to have your equipment as for the cruise dive you should only do it if you dont plan to go diving alot becaus the diving equipment does tend to get kinda of expensive but prices vary on what kinda brands you buy hope thid helps

Purely personal preference, don't buy a mask without trying a few - must be comfortable and easy to clear - most good dive shops will let you try them on, if they won't go somewhere else. Same with the snorkel - I don't do much snorkelling now - so it is only for on the surface at the end of a dive if I ran out of air.

Going to Maui... Would it be cost efficient to take my own snorkeling gear?

I think I can do snorkeling all over the place (even at hotel). I know the tours give you the equipment but thought that way I would be able to snorkle at any beach etc... Just wondering. Thanks.

In addition to cost effectiveness, bringing your own gear ensures better fit, reliability, and comfort. Don't forget to bring an underwater camera or two. Some tours will offer "snuba"; a form of snorkeling where you are attached by an umbilical air-hose to an oxygen supply on the surface. This allows you to dive as deep as the length of the umbilical and/or until your oxygen supply is depleted. If you plan to go to Molokini, book a morning trip (before the afternoon tradewinds kick up withe caps). Aloha and may you have a safe and pleasant journey.

If you're new to boating, you may be overwhelmed of all the boating equipment and accessories that are out there. You may not even know where to begin! Boating is intended to be an enjoyable experience, but when it comes down to it, safety should be your number one priority.

For a bare minimum of safety boat supplies, you'll need: life jackets, flares, strong docking rope, right sized anchor for your boat, first aid kit, fire extinguisher, whistle, back up batteries, maintenance tools, navigational equipment, and radio communication. It's also possible to pick up wi-fi Internet access and cell signals a few miles off shore. You should talk to your ISP and cell service providers for details. You should also consider having an air ventilator installed so you won't have to worry about carbon monoxide poisoning.

After safety, next on the list of must-have boating equipment are living necessities, including refrigerators, heaters, fans, microwaves, plumbing, and more. If you can afford all the appropriate convenience accessories, you can have you a nice vacation out on the water for a few days or more!

Finally, there are luxury items for you to invest in so you can have a relaxing, luxurious time on board. Boating accessories such as DVD players, TV's, and music radio are popular these days. You can also bring along sporting accessories for fun water activities. Some people prefer fishing, while others like water skiing. If you prefer more passive sports like fishing, then there is plenty of hi-tech fishing gear for you to choose from. If extreme sports is more your thing, then bring along the water skis! If you enjoy adventure, then you can buy snorkeling gear and do some underwater exploring!

There is obviously so much to choose from, and as long as you always put safety first, you will find out how fun and exciting boating can be.
