Best underwater digital camera?
Hi ,I am looking to buy a digital camera( with video shooting features as well) mainly to be used for underwater photography during snorkeling ,diving etc.Can you recommend which one should we go for? Also, someone told me to buy a normal camera and just get an underwater casing for it-which option is better do you think? We are going for a trip of a lifetime and I would want my pictures to be great-not fuzzy and the video sounds not muffled.Any help much appreciated -thanks in advance
we always use a disposable one like a fuji . works real well, but no sound sorry. usually about $10 USD

IT has always been refreshing to see photos or watch videos taken from under the sea, but it would have been more delightful if we take photos or videos ourselves using a waterproof camera (digital or otherwise).
However, the cost of waterproof cameras, regardless of whether it is digital or manual in nature, entails too much money.
The high cost of waterproof cameras (in whatever form) compelled modern-day bright minds to come up with something that would address concerns of people who would want to get a glimpse of the underwater but can't seem to afford buying themselves cameras designed to take photos or videos beneath the water surface.
With the price of digital underwater cameras keep shooting up alongside with new features, which includes higher color definition and size resolution, there is just no way that a typical American family would be able to get one especially at a time when the economy of the entire United States remains sluggish.
Watertight Cases
A weeklong family beach break is something that is worth documenting using our cameras. Photo shoots along the beach, at the gazebo, or at the cottage with the entire family would be delightful and fun. But wouldn't it be much better if we also get to shoot photos or videos of the family while underneath the water surface --- exploring reefs and shoals in search of the colorful aquamarine species.
How would we be able to do just that with conventional cameras? An innovation called as watertight camera case was introduced in the US market. When it was first launched, manufacturers of this "great idea" said that their new gadget would protect the cameras from getting wet even under the surface as they boasted of features designed to keep water from sneaking into the ultra-sensitive internal system of the cameras.
In its early stages in the US market, everything seemed okay but not for long as people start complaining and expressing doubt on the veracity of its features. According to some, who posted comments on the net said that watertight cases are "not tight after all". There are also posts claiming that the quality of watertight cases is poor.
The Condom Magic
Another fresh idea came afloat as to how to transform your conventional cameras into an instant underwater moment capturer, without really spending so much on the expensive watertight cases, whose quality and reliability remains a suspect.
Try using un-lubricated condoms in sealing your cameras. The task isn't really that complicated. In fact, you can seal your cameras yourself --- in just a matter of five minutes.
In sealing your cameras for an underwater adventure, you would need three condoms, a pair of scissors, desiccant packet, paper towel roll and "krazy" glue. The first thing you should do is to cut the paper towel roll a little longer than the lens.
Place the re-sized roll at the lens. Place the camera inside an outstretched condom along with the desiccant packet and manually seal it. Get another condom and place inside it the sealed camera then seal it again. Do it, one more time with the third condom before you finally do the final sealing procedure using the glue.
It's done. Diving enthusiasts, aquamarine scientists and researchers or people simply in search of new adventures can now use conventional camera underwater.

There are two types of underwater camera systems: an ""amphibious"" camera, which is a self-contained waterproof system, and an SLR land camera with waterproof housing. Amphibious systems are small, compact, and easy to travel with, while SLRs offer more advanced features, such as auto-focus, advanced exposure control, and through-the-lens viewing.
The ""amphibious"" cameras are probably best for those of you who want a simple, easy-to-use point-and-shoot camera. Amphibious systems usually have a built-in lens and they will take pictures on land as well as underwater. They also have an automatic film load and advance and are generally compact, lightweight, and rugged.
If you are a more serious photographer and want the advantages of a single-lens reflex camera you will probably be happier with a land camera in waterproof underwater housing.
As a new underwater photographer you need to know the difference between taking pictures on land and underwater. The difference is what you are shooting through to take the picture. Air is transparent, whereas water is not. Light does not travel in a straight path underwater like it does in air. Water is denser and it includes particles of sand, plankton, and other debris which scatter, reflect, and absorb light.
You should know that all your underwater equipment needs and requires special care. Salt, sun, dirt and improper storage can damage a camera. Even though all your new stuff is made from rugged materials built for underwater use, it still needs to be rinsed in fresh water after every use. Saltwater should never be allowed to dry on the joints of the controls and metal fittings. Salt is your system's number one enemy. Do not rinse with a hose. The high pressure may actually force salt crystals and sand into crevices. Use only soft lens tissues or photographic lens cloths on the lenses.
The most important thing you need to know about your underwater camera care is how to clean and lubricate the O-ring after every use. The O-Ring creates a watertight seal to protect your equipment from water, and so it is very important. The seal must be flawless— with no scratches, cuts, sand, hair – nothing on its surface. If it is not, the underwater photo equipment will be ruined. Water must be kept out! When in doubt about the sealing capability of an O-ring, always throw it out and replace with a new one.
Both your camera and your flash will need a watertight housing. You can use a flash fill-in to brighten underwater subjects at close range. Even with large flash units, though, light does not extend beyond 12 feet. The maximum effective distance of most flashes is four to five feet. Subjects farther away will not appear very colorful. Don't forget you need to wait for your flash to recycle.
Assess conditions underwater before you dive and set aperture and shutter speed before entering the water.
The best time to take pictures without using a flashgun is between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., when the sun is overhead. To capture sunrays with the subject in silhouette, face the sun. Close-up shots of fish are best taken at night--the fish are sleepy and not as active
Shallow water near steep rocky shorelines, coral reefs and atolls, and areas near tidal streams are great places to photograph sea-life.
